Appliatinu filed Octoberl 16, 190B. Serial No. 339,256.
To will" 10i/,0111 if 'n1/ulg non/cern.'
Be it known that we, IsABELL ALLEAY and GEORGE H ixLoN, both citizens ofthe United States, und residents of Kansas Cit-y', Missouri, und Shawneeton-n, Illinois, respectively, have invented certain new and useful 11nprovenientel in Electric Curling-Irons, of' which the following is a specification containing a full, clear, .and exact description, reference being-had to the accompanying drawings, forming Aa part hereof.
Our invention relates to an electric curling iron, und consists in a hair curling iron Where by the\volt-age of an ordinary ncandescent lamp circuit is utilized in heating the main tube or body of the curling iron.
The princiial object of our invention is to rovide an ectric curling iron wherein diferent degrees of heat may be readily obtained, which arrangement is essential in the `practical and successful operation of an elec tric curling iron.
To the above purposes, our invention eon.
sists in cert-ain novel features of construction and arrangement ot' parte, 'which will he hereinafter more fully set forth, uint/ed out in the claims, and illustrated in t ie acconipanying drawings, in whichz-- Figure 1 is a side elevation of an electric curling iron of our improved construction; Fig, is a planview of the curling iron with one leg of the tongs swung aroundat right angles to the inain leg or tube; Fig. 3 is an enlarged horizontal section taken through the center ofthe curling iron; F ig. 4 is an enlarged transverse sec-tion taken on the line b--t of Fig. l j, yFigA 5 is a horizontal section taken `through the center of a hair crimper construct-ed in -iiccordunce with our inven-P tion.
Referring by numerals to the accompanyingr drawings :-----1 desi etes the cylindrical handle of the iron, the orward end Z of which is reduced in diameter. relative to the main bod y )onion of said handle, and removablyr seated in said reduced forward end is a tube 3, the forward end of which is o en, and which forms the main leg of the curling iron.
.Located on the interior of theforward end 2 of the handle, immediately to the'rear of the tube 3, is a disk 4 of insulation, in 'wlich is removably seated the rear end of 'a tube 5, of glass, porcelain, or analogous insulati material, the exterior of which. is threade as designated by 6, ,and on which is Wound the body portions of three nonvinsulated wires?, S, and 9, constructed of material of varying conductivity. '.lhese various wires are thus provided in order to vary -the resistance of the electric current passing through the Wires, and in turn vary the' degrec of heat obtained on the interior of the tube 3.1
The three wires, after being wound the entire length of the tube 5, are connected at the outer end thereof i which leeds through said tube 5 and through the handle l. seidl handle i is a disk 11 of insuiation, on the outeface ofwhich is rovided a contact plate 12, to which the en of the 1Wire 10 is c0nnected. l
Lo is s lilock i3 of insulation, in the outer face of which arranged three lates 14, 15, and 16, tti W ich are connected3 respectively the ends et the wires 7, S, and 9.
Formed through the forward portion of the handle l u slot 17, through which 'operrites e nin 18, the inner end of which is adapt ed to- Contact with. the and the. outer end of said pin being provided with $1- hutton 1Q.
Connected to the 'iin i8 is the. forward end of e conductor 20, wliichis extended through the handle i, through the disk] 1, and is attached to a contact plate 2l.
Reniovahly positioned in the rear end of 'the handle-1 is a plug 22, en the inner end of which is fixed contact plates 23 and 24,
to an insulated wire 10,"
Located in the rear end'of ated in the orw ard end of the' handle Q1 'platea 14, 15 and 16,
which are adapted to contact respectively f with the contat-.t plates 2i and. 12, y:und to which platee I ends of' conductors 25 which extend oulwnrdly through the plug: 22, and whichfare connected at their opposite ends to an ordi nary incandescent lamp circuit, (mother suit able source of electrical supply.
livotally mounted on the forward end x2 of the handle 1 by means of a screw or rivet 26 is a plate 27, the forward end of which is provided with a pair of ears 28, between which is ulcrunied the rear end of the Swinging jaw or leg 29 vof the curling iron, which jaw or leg is "curved in cross section and adapted to it over the tube 3. The rear end oi this jaw or leg extends upwardly and. rearwardly from` the pivot point, and a spring 30 is interposed 23 and Z4 'are connected the ICT;
