To In whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN L. MORRISON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Joliet, in the county of Will and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Collapsible Pails, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in pails or receptacles of the collapsible class that is especially adapted for carrying lunches or dinners, and, when the contents have been removed, may be folded into conipact form so as to be carried in the pocket of the user.
The especial object of my improvements is to produce a pail of this character that can be economically made; that is without springs or complicated parts; in which pastry can be kept separate from meat; in which access can be had to the contents from the side instead of from the top in which coffee, tea or other liquids can be carried without danger of spilling upon the food in the pail; in which all the parts are accessible for cleaning purposes, and that can be folded in a perfectly compact form when the contents are removed and inclosed in one of the elements of which the pail is composed.
In the drawings which form a part of this application :-Figure 1 is a perspective view of my invention complete; Fig. 2 is a top plan view with the cover removed; Fig. 3 is a perspective showing it open; Fig. 4. is a detail of the liquid holder; Fig. 5 is a detail of the tray which forms a part of my invention; Fig. 6 is a view showing the pail disassembled; Fig. 7 is a perspective showing the pail folded and incased in the liquid receptacle; Fig. 8 is a fragmentary detail showing alocking device used in my invention.
Referring to the drawings in detail, it will be seen that the body portion of my improved pail is composed of a plurality of sections or leaves of sheet metal designated 1, 1*, 2, 2 3, 3, which are of the same length, substantially the same width, and are hinged together The bottom is formed of a single piece 4, which is hinged at one end as at 4 on the end section 2, and the top or cover is likewise composed of a single piece and hinged at 5 on 2, all as clearly shown in Fig. 6.
The sections 1 and 1 are respectively hinged at 2 2, to the sections 2, 2 and the two sections 3, 3, are hinged together at 3*, and at 2 2, to the sections 2, 2*, respectively all of the hinges being of a simple form which permit the sections to be folded in either direction.
The section 1 is somewhat wider than 1 so that the latter will overlap it when they are folded together. 1 is a tubular catch or socket secured near the top and close to the free edge of the section 1, and 1 is a slot out near the lower end of the said section, and said catch and slot underlie the free edge of the section 1 when the parts are assemthrough the slot 1. A flange 1 is formed along the lower horizontal edge of the section 1.
Section 1" is bent over along its free vertical edge to form a housing and slideway 1 for the latch. This latch is a piece of wire bent at its lower end to form a hook 1 and at its upper end to form a grasping portion 1 by which the latch may be moved up and down, and the end of this portion I is adapted to enter the catch 1 in the section 1 when the parts are assembled. The section 1 is also formed with a flange 1 along its lower edge.

To the inner face of each of the sections 2, 2 a shelf 2 is secured so as to extend outwardly from the face of the section to receive the bent Over end flanges 7 of the tray 7see Figs. 2 and 5. The section 2 is formed with an inwardly extending flange 2 along its bottom edge, which is bent up to receive the bent down end flange 4* of the bottom section 1. This bottom section has a hole 4 punched near one of its long edges to receive the hook 1 when the parts are assembled.
The top section 5 is formed along its side edges with downwardly bent flanges 5 and its free end is bent over to form a housing for the latches 5. Each of these latches consists of a piece of wire bent up at one end to form a grasping portion, and at its opposite end to form a hook which is adapted to enter bled to form a pail, the catch projecting The sections 2, 2*, along each of their rethe holes 5 formed through the 'fianges 5 and 2 through the flanged portion 2 of the section 2*. At the angle between the main portion of the section 2 and its flanges 2 ,the metal is crimped to form beads which are adapted to be slidably engaged by the flanges 6 of the rectangular cup 6, so that the latter may be removably attached to the section 2 as shown in Fig. 2.

A receptacle constructed as shown and described is adapted to be assembled as shown in Figs. 1 and 3 to form a pail, having ahinged cover, and doors at one side. The latches 5 serve to lock the cover closed, and the latches 1 serve to lock the doors closed. when the contents have been removed the cup discon nected, the tray is lifted out, the latchesdisengaged from their respective keepers, and the sections can be folded together into the compact form shown in Fig. 7 the part 4, folding into 2, part 1 fitting part 4, part 1 into 2 parts 3 folding back to back and fitting between the previously folded parts 1, 1*, the cover folding back upon part 2, and the tray fitting into the cover. When thus folded and packed, the parts are inserted in the cup 6, and the cup cover 6 in place, the
whole is of such size as to be carried in the pocket.
In the construction of my improved pail, changes in details may be made without de parting from its essential features and principles, I therefore do not wish to be limited to the exact construction shown but What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a collapsible receptacle, a plurality of sections hinged together to form the sides,
ends, bottom and top of the receptacle,
' detachably holding' the top section locked on the parts are assembled, means detachably locking the top section in place when the parts are assembled, means detachably looking two of the side sections together when the parts are assembled, a shelf, and means for detachably supporting said shelf.
4. In a collapsible rece tacle, a plurality of metal sections foldably 'nged together to form a complete box one of said sections having an integral projecting bead along two of its corners formed by bending the metal, means for detachably locking the sections together when assembled in receptacle form,
and a cup slidably mounted on the beaded portions of said section, said cup having a suitable cover and adapted to hold the parts of the receptacle when folded into compact form.
5. In a collapsible receptacle having hinged side sections, means for detachably connecting two of said sections together, said means consisting of a vertical latch slidably mounted on one of said sections and provided with a grasping portion and engaging ends, and keepers arranged on the complementary section and adapted to receive the ends of the latch.
6. In a collapsible receptacle having hinged side sections, means for detachably connecting two of said sections together, said means consisting of a vertical latch consisting of a rod bent to form a grasping portion 1 and having its ends bent to form hooks substantially as shown, and keepers adapted to receive said hooks, said keepers consisting of a socket and a tubular catch arranged on the complementary section.
7. A collapsible receptacle consisting of foldably hinged sides, end, bottom and top sections, pivoted latches for holding the bottom section in its assembled portion, rockable and slidable latches adapted to detachably engage suitable openings in the top and adjacent end section, a latch and keepers adapted to detachably connect two of the side sections together, a box slidably mounted on one of the end sections, and a tray detachably connected with the inner sides of the end sections.
