Description

LATENTED MAY 21, 1907.
W. PETERSON.
.TRUNK. APPLICATION I'ILED MAY 16,1906.
. it!!! IIIIIIIIIIIFII'III ark-cum;
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE PETERSON, OF LEONARDVILLE,
TRUNK.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known thatLGEoRen WILLIAM PETER- SON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Leonardville, inthe county of Riley and State of Kansas, have invented a new and useful Trunk, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in trunks.
The object of the present invention is to provide a simple, inexpensive and efficient attachment for trunks, adapted to be readily operated for causing a pair of wheels to project from the bottom of a trunk at one end thereof, for enabling the same to be quickly and easily wheeled from one point to another.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of this character, which, when not in use, will be housed within the trunk, and which will not permit dust or other substances to enter the same.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction and novel combination of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and ointed out in the claims hereto appende it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion, size and minor details of construction, within the scope of the claims, may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
In the drawing:Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal sectional viewof a trunk provided with an attachment constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail sectional view illustrating the arrangement of the parts when the caster wheel is projected. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of the vertical movable member, which carries the caster wheel. Fig. 5 is an enlarged detail sectional view on the line 55 of Fig. 3. Fig. 6 is a similar view on the line 66 of Fig. 3.
Like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all the-figures of the drawin 1 designates a trunk, which is provided at each side with a longitudinal casing 2, arranged horizontally and located at the lower portion of the trunk and having a dependin arm or portion 3, which extends downward from the horizontal body ortion of the cas- Specification of Letters Patent.

structed of sheet metal, is provided at its sides with projecting attachment flanges 5 and 6, whic are perforated for the reception of rivets, or other suitable fastening devices, for securing the casing to the trunk. The casing is slightly enlarged adjacent to the depending arm or portion 3 to receive a verticall movable member 7, consisting of a vertica body portion, which is slidable in a vertical guide 8. The vertically movable member 7 is provided at its lower portion witha projecting caster wheel 9, which is mounted on a transverse spindle 10, and the latter is supported at one end by the vertical] movab e member and at the other en by a bracket 11, but the caster wheel may be mounted on the vertically movable member in any other desired manner, as will be readily understood.
The guide 8, which is secured to the trunk by rivets, or other suitable fastening devices, is provided at opposite sides with guide flanges 12, which are substantially lL-shaped in horizontal section to embrace the side edges of the vertically movable member. The guide is secured to the trunk by means of rivets 13, or other suitable fastening devices, which pass through suitable ears of the guide. The vertically movable member is provided at its upper end with an arm 14, arranged substantially at right angles to the body portion of the vertically movable member, and provided at its outer end with a headed stud 15, which is arranged in an inclined guide 16 of a horizontally movable member 17. The horizontally movable member 17, which is slidable in a horizontal guide 18, is provided with an inclined slot to form the guide 16. The inclined slot provides inclined upper and lower edges, which are adapted to engage the headed stud 15 to force the vertically movable member either upwardly or downwardly. This will enable the caster wheel to be either projected from thebottom of the trunk, or withdrawn into the same. The headed stud may be provided with an anti-friction sleeve and the horizontal guide 18, which is riveted or otherwise secured to the trunk, is provided with upper and lower horizontal. guide flanges which are L-shaped in cross section to embrace the horizontally movable member 17.
The-horizontally movable member is operated by a bar or rod 19, which extends along the casing 2 to the farther end of the trunk, and the latter is provided with a corner open- V ing 20, Communicating the casing and wheel below the bottom of the trunk, as illustrated in'full lines in Fig. 3 of the -drawing.
Although the attachment is shown applied to a trunk, yet it will be readilyuiplparcut that it is a plicable to various s of receptacles, an other articles, as it will permit such receptacles, or articlesto be converted into a wheeled piece for conveniently moving the same.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a device of the class described, the combination of a vertical guide, a horizontal guide, a slidable member movable in the vertical guide and provided with a caster wheel,
an operating member slidable in the horizon tal guide, and means carried by the operating member for raising and lowering the said slidable member.
2. In a device of the classdescribed, the
combination with a receptacle provided at the bottom with an opening, a vertical guide extending upwardl from the opening, a horizontal guide, a sh able-member mounted in the vertical guide and movable through the opening of the said receptacle and provided with a caster wheel, an operating member slidable in the horizontal guide and having an inclined slot, and means mounted on the first mentioned member and operating in the slot for raising and lowering the caster wheel when the operating member isactuated.
3. In a device of the class described, the combination with a receptacle provided with a bottom opening, a vertically slidable-member mounted on the rece tacle and movable through the said openmg, .-ahorizontally slidable member gulded on the receptacle and provided with an inclinedslot, a projection carried by the vertically movable mem- ,ber andfloperating in the slot of the horizontally movable member, and means for operating the latter. '1 v 4. In a device of the class described, the combination with'a receptacle provided at the bottom with an opening and having an end opening, a member slidable through the bottom opening and carrying a caster Wheel,
an operating bar mounted within the receptacle and extending through the end opening of the same, and means carried by the operating bar for actuating the said member v -to raise and lower the caster wheel.
. 5. The combination with a receptacle provided at the bottom with an opening located near one endof the receptacle, said recepter cle being provided at the opposite end with an opening, a vertically movable member carrying a roller and operating through the bottom opening, a horizontally movable member having inclined edges for actuating the vertically movable member, an operating bar connected with the horizontally movable member and extending through the endv opening, and a casing mounted on the receptacle and receiving thesaid members and the operating bar. 4 i
In testimony, thatI claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto aflixed my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
GEORGE WILLIAM rari kson.
