Be it known that I, ALBERT GAINES, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Saco, in the county of York and State of Maine, have invented new and useful Improvements in Collar-Buttons, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in collar buttons, larly means for fastening the button in position to prevent casual disengagement thereof from the collar band, the object in view being to provide a button having fastening means of novel and peculiar construction and of a simple and inexpensive nature whereby the button may be fastened in operative position in an effective manner.

In the accompanying drawing,-Figure 1 is a front elevational view of a button embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a longi tudinal section thereof.

Referring to the drawing, the letter A designates a collar button of conventional form, to wit: a button having a base 1, head 2, and connecting shank 3, and. which may be constructed of any desired material.

In accordance with my invention, the base 1 is provided with a socket 5 extending diametrically across the same and opening through one of the edges thereof, the inner end of said socket terminating adjacent the diametrically opposite side of the head, while the shank 3 is provided with a slot or passage 4 arranged in parallel relation to the socket The fastening device comprises an elongated. said strip being bent to form parallel arms 5 and 6 and a connecting loop or bight portion 7, said arms being properly spaced and arranged to respectively slide into and through the said socket and. passage, while the loop 7 projects slightly beyond the adjacent edge of the base. The fastener is designed when inserted to be held in applied position by the frictional binding action of the arms thereof against the walls of the socket and passage.

The button may be used either as a front or rear collar button, Fig. 1 showing the button as applied to the rear buttonhole flap and comprehends particu-- of the collar band, 8 designating the flap and 9 the buttonhole therein, both appearing in dotted lines. The button is inserted through the buttonhole and then the fastener is applied in the manner shown so that the bight portion 7 and adjacent half of the shankengaging arm 6 will form a loop to receive and engage the lower free edge of the flap, thus holding the button firmly in position against all liability of casual disconnection.

In the use of the button as a front collar button, the button is first inserted in the ordinary manner through the buttonholes in the meeting ends of the collar band and collar and the fastener then inserted from above so that the upper edges of the said. meeting ends of the band and collar will be received within and engaged by the bight portion 7, whereby the button will be securely held in position in an obvious manner.

As the construction is simple, it will be apparent that the button and fastener may be manufactured and sold at a low cost, and that the button will be effectually prevented from pulling out under strain.

1. As a new article of manufacture, a col lar button provided in its base with a receiving socket and in its shank with a passage parallel with the socket, in combination with a looped fastener having its arms lying in parallel planes, one of the arms being slidably fitted in said socket and the other arm slidably projecting through said passage.

2. A collar button provided in its base with a socket extending diametrically from one side thereof and terminating adjacent to its opposite side and formed adjacent the inner end of its shank y ith a passage parallel with the socket, and a fastener comprising a looped strip of metal having parallel arms for respective insertion within said socket and through said passage.
