HEINRICH RUTT, OF RHEYDT, GERMANY.
CAN-OPENER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 21, 1907.
Application filed July 13,1906. Serial No. 326,014.
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HEINRICH BUTT, a subject of the German Empire, residing at Rheydt, in the Kingdom of Prussia, Germany, have invented a new and useful Can- Opener, of which the following is a full and complete specification.
The object of the present invention is a contrivance for opening, preserved meat boxes, or other cans by means of a curved knife. The latter is carried by a hand lever which is pivoted to a stand in such a manner, that cans of different height and size may be read ily opened.
In the accompanying drawing: Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved can opener; Fig. 2 a detail of the knife with the supporting lever partly broken away, and Fig. 3 a section on the dotted line indicated in Fig. 2.
In the device shown the can opener is provided with a standard or upright a, perforated at suitable distances and held in position by a vise b. This vise is composed of upper and lower parallel arms integral with upright a, the lower arm being tapped for engagement with a clamp screw. The upright a, is embraced by a tubular slide 6, which is perforated for the admission of a pinf, adapted to engage either of perforations of upright a, so that in this way the elevation of the slide may be made to correspond to the height of the can to be opened. From slide 6, projects an arm 6, to which is hinged at e a vertically oscillating hand lever c, which carries the knife d. The placing of the tin under the apparatus can, of course, be effected in any other manner, and, if desired, the lever a could be pivoted direct on the stand or upright. The stand is fixed to the top of the table or counter h by means of the vise b; the tin to be opened is placed on the latter or on the table in such a manner that it is operated on by the knife depressed by the lever c, at the required spot. It is then turned around and, as the knife is curved, a circular section will be cut from the tin. The opening of a tin is performed very easily by the new opener, and persons not possessed of much strength can operate it. is w Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
A can opener provided with a perforated upright having a pair of integral parallel arms, a clamp screwengaging the lower arm, a perforated tubular slide having a laterally projecting arm, a pin for locking the slide to the upright, a vertically oscillating lever pivoted to the arm, and a cutter secured to the lever, substantially as specified.
Signed by me at Dusseldorf, Germany, this thirty-first day of May 1906.
HEINRICH RUTT.
