CLARENCE L. TAYLOR, OF ALLIANCE, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO THE MORGAN ENGINEERING COMPANY, OF ALLIANCE, OHIO.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 14, 1907.

Be it known that I, CLARENCE L. TAYLOR, of Alliance, in the county of Stark and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Overhead Traveling Cranes and I do hereby declare the following to'be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improvement in overhead traveling cranes and is designed more particularly as an improvement on the construction disclosed in my pending application No. 320,118 filed June 4th, 1906.
In the construction disclosed in the application above referred to, the main trolley is carried on two girders each composed of two separated sections, and the auxiliary trolley on two girders located intermediate the inner, sections of the main girders.
The object of the present invention is to simplify and cheapen the construction of this type of crane, without affecting its efficiency, and it consists in dispensing with intermediate girders for the auxiliary trolley, and mounting the latter on rails carried by the bottom flanges of the inner sections of the main girders.
The accompanying drawing is a view in transverse section through the bridge, showing diagrammatically, the two trolleys thereon.
1 represents the two main girders each composed of two sections, the sections of each girder being separated and disconnected from end to end, so as to permit of the free and uninterrupted movement of the hoist chains 2 depending from the main trolley. These girders are mounted, in the usual manner on end carriages (not shown) which travel on elevated trackways, on which the bridge travels and is supported.
The sections of each girder 1 are provided on their upper faces with rail 3, on which the flanged wheels 4 of the main trolley 5 travels. This trolley 5 is mounted on a series of flanged track wheels 4; arranged in pairs as shown, one pair being located at or near each corner of the trolley, thus distributing the weight of the trolley and its load on the four sections of the girders 1, and bringing the weight of the suspended load in planes between the sections of each girder, thus ob viating to a large extent, the tendency of the sections to spread. These girder sections may be of box form as shown, or they may be I-shape or any other approved form.
The main trolley 5 carries suitable hoisting drums, to which the hoist cables or chains '2 are secured, and the trolley also carries suitable motors and gearing for actuating the drums and propelling the trolley lengthwise the bridge. The lower flanges 6 of the inner sections of the girders 1 project inwardly a sufiticient distance to support the rails 7 on which the flanged track wheels 8 of auxiliary trolley 9 travels. The sides of the trolley rest well up to the sides of the inner sections of the girders and operate as a stay or brace for the latter, and tend to prevent any spreading of the girders.
The auxiliary trolley carries hoist chains 10 which pass downwardly between the inner girders and may be employed for tilting a ladle carried by the main hoist cables 2, or for lifting and transporting the lighter loads.
It is evident that many slight changes might be resorted to in the relative arrange ment of parts shown and described without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention hence I would have it understood that I do not wish to confine myself to the exact construction of parts shown and described, but,

In an overhead crane, the combination of two girders each made up of two parallel separated sections, the latter being disconnected from end to end, a trolley having a bearing on the four girder sections, rails carried by the inner sections of the girder near their lower edges and an auxiliary trolley mounted on said rails.
