NUT-LOCK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 7, 1907.
Application filed January 7,1907. Serial No. st1', 2o0.,
1U we! mom v it concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN J. JENNiNos, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Reidville, in the county of Spartanburg and State of South Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Nut-Locks, of which the following is a specification.
his invention relates to that class or type of nut locks in which a nut has a divided part that-projects from the face of the nut, such part carrying a second nut which may be ad justed upon the divided part, to compress the same upon the threads of the bolt to provide a secure lock, and my invention not only provides means for effecting such a look, but
also includes means whereby the removal or se aration of the compressing-nut fromthe bo t-engaging-nutv is prevented, as will be hereinafter set forth.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is the nut B, which is internally threaded to enthreading the neck the nut gage the threads of the bolt may be of less thickness than the standard nuts, and from the front or face of the nut B there projects a neck I), the samehaving internal threads, the same as those of the nut, the exterior of the neck istapered or conical and diminishes in diameter from the face of the nut B outward, the neck I) is externally threaded and is pro,- vided with a plurality of slits 'or kerfs b which extend from the outer end of the neck to the face of the nut.
By the construction shown the bolt-engaging-nut and its externally tapered neck are internally threaded before the slits are formed in the neck, and either prior or subseciuent to the slitting or kerfing of the neck tie external threads are formed, and such threads may be of the same gage or pitch as the threads of the bolt. By internally B will have a greater bolt engaging surface than is usual, and the width of the nut proper may be less than nuts as usually manufactured.
The compression-nut C has a tapered open:
ing or bore which is threaded to correspond with the threads upon theneck, and in practice the compression-nut will engage the external threads on the neck I) when positioned at the outer end of the neck, and the compression-nut O has formed in its outer face a recess 0. W hen the coin ress on-nut C'has' been placed upon the neo 'b of the bolt-engagingnut B, the outer end of the neck is upset or spread outward to provide a flange I), which will enter therecess 0 Whenthe compression-nut is at the outer end of the neck, and when so positioned the' divisions of the neck will not be compressed, the boltengagingenut will be free bolt and the one with the other.
ting of the end of the of the compression-nut either when on or. off of the bolt and serves to maintain the sides in alinement so that the jaws of a wrench will engage both nuts to turn the same in The fianging or upsetumson, in screwing the -bolt-engaging-nut on or off the bolt, and when the bolt-engaging" nut has been screwed home be moved to engage solely nut and it can be moved cause the sections of the the threads to securely lock the nut upon the be t. i
The bolt-engag'ging-nut and the compression-nut may be furnished to the trade With internal threads of standardgage, as an article of manufacture, and the nut B is not weakened by being slit. In use the nut C, may be forced toward the outer face of the nut B, to give the desired amount of friction the Wrench may the compressionbetwecn the threads of the bolt and the neck, and when the compression nut is screwed to the outer end of the neck; the
nuts mav be removed from the bolt in the usual manner.
of the wrench will effect suchla strain that the nut will be held on the bolt so asrto pro- 'vide a secure and positive lock, andfwhen the nuts are ofsmall size two opposite slits Will .be sufficient, where'aswith slits are preferable.
