T0 LLZLu/hmn, rum/ray concern.-
Be it known that I, ALBERT O. IBUGKIUs,
J12, of Chicago, Cook county, Illinois, have invented a new and useful Journal Box and Lid, of which the following is a full, clear, and
exact descriptiomreference being had to the way cars should have tightly fitting and dustproo'l lids and that the lids should be firmly that the mechanism should be simple and compact, and not subject to be disordered bv the @vere usage to which the parts of railway cars are subjected. In these respects my present invention is an improvement upon all prior devices known tome.
In the drawings, 2 represents the axle box,-
and 3 the lid which may be of usual external form, hinged to the lug 4- of the box by a pivot pin 5. The closing mechanism which is the subject of my present invention comprises a spring 6, preferably a coiled spring, which bears at one end on a seat or socket 7 on the inside of the lid and at its other end bears against a bell crank lever 8 pivoted to the inner side of thelid betweenlugs 9. The
-upper arm of the lever bears a ainst a projectlng part 10 of the lug of the ox' which is preferably so shaped that when the lid is open the end of the lever bears against the outer face of the lug, and that as the lid is closed the end .of the lever will pass back of the lug into a rear recess'll.
As the lid is opened fromits closed position its bearing against the downwardly projecting portion of the lug will turn thelever on its fulcrum and will compress the spring,
but when the lid isfully opened, the springthough compressed will not exert a closing tendency upon the lid because of the passing of the lever to the front side of the lug which will cause the lever to tend to hold the lid open. In closing" the lid, as soon as the lever arm passes the mi ddle of the projecting portion ofthelug, the reaction of the spring will press the lid firmly towards the box and will hold it against the same with a constant pressure, for even when the lidis closed the spring .is. not entirely relaxed. The inner face of the lid may be formed with a rib 12a't its lower'end which fits within the lower edge of the box opening; also with an upper rib 13 which bears against the upper edge of the box opening when the lid is closed.
The device is very simple, strong and durable. I
' Within the scope of my invention as dein many ways, since What I claim is 1. A journal boxhaving a hinged or pivoted lid, a lever pivoted to the inner side-of said lid, and a spring seated between a bearing on the lid and one arm of the lever, the held to the seat or face of the box at all times;-
box having an internal cam-bearing with which the other arm of said lever contacts to hold the lid in both open and closed position; substantially. as described. j 2. A journal box having a hinged or pivoted lid, a bell-crank lever pivoted to the inne'r side of the lid, a spring bearing on the lid extending inwardly below one arm of the lever, a spring seated between said arm and bearing, there being a cam surface on the box engaged by the other arm of the lever; substantially as described.
3. A journal box having'a hingedor pivoted cover provided with an inwardly projecting rib or flange which is arranged to fit against the upper edge of. the box openingga lever-pivoted to the inner side of the lid, there being. a cam bearing on the box for one arm of the lever, and a spring seated between the other arm of the lever and a bear ing on the lid with its axis substantially parallel with the lower portion of the lid; substantially as described. c
4. A journal box having a pivoted lid, a lever fulcrumed to the innerside' of said lid, and a spring seated between one arm of the lever andabearing on the lid, the box h aving within. the lid a bearing for the other arm of said lever formed by two oppositely beveled cam surfaces which act upon the lever and spring 'to hold the lid in both open an d closed position; substantially as described,
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set m vl1and.- f i 1'- r ALBERT O. BUOKIUS, JR.
