Be it known that I, RICHARD Ooi-I, a citi- Zen of the United States of America, residing in Marissa, in the county of St. Clair and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Middlings-Purifiers, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
My invention relates to a middlings-puriiier; and it has for its object to provide a simple and efficient construction in a mid dlingspuri'lier whereby the dust is separated from the middlings and discharged from the puri- Iier.
Figure I is a vertical cross-section taken through my middlings-purifier. Fig. II is a top or plan view of one corner of the regulator with the adjacent portion of the purifiercasing shown in horizontal section. E ig. III is a cross-section taken through a portion of the regulator.
1 designates the casing of my middlingspuriiier. I 2 is the vertical inlet-spout through which the middlings enters the purifier, this spout having associated therewith an adjustable gate 3, as usual.
4 is a feed-roller which is located at the discharge end of the inlet-spout.
5 is a funnel-shaped housing that partially incloses the discharge end of the inlet-spout and which is provided with an outlet-opening 6 at its lower end, through which communication is obtained to the purifier-chamber A, which extends from end to end of the machine. The rear or inner wall of the housing 5 is separated from the top 1 of the purifiercasing to provide a passage-way 7 between said members for the escape of dust from the interiorof said housing.
8 is a funnel-shaped front well that is located rearwardly from but adjacent to the housing 5 and the forward wall of which is separated from the inner wall of said housing to provide a dust passage-way 9 between the purifier-chamber A and the sp ace above said well.
10 is a rearwardly-closing valve that controls the passage-way 7, and 11 is a rearwardly-closing valve that controls the passage-Way 9, these two valves being adapted to be regulated from the exterior of the purifier.
Extending rearwardly from the rear wall of the well 8 is a horizontal partition 12, between which and the top of the purifier-casing is a rearwardly-extending dust-conduit 13, that has communication with the space above the well 8 through the medium of a passage-way 14, that is controlled by a rearwardly-closing valve 15, operatable from the exterior of the purifier.
16 is a suction-fan housing located approximately mid-length of the longitudinal partition, that is provided with an eye 17,furnish ing communication between the conduit 13 and said fan-housing. In the fan-housing is a fan 18.
19 is a conveyer operatable' in the bottom of the well 8.
As the middlings is discharged from the vertical inlet-spout into the housing 5, inclosing said inlet-spout, the dust contained in the middlings is in part drawn by the suctional action ofthe fan 18 through the passage-way 7 into the space above the well 8, and as the middlings escapes through the housing-outlet 6 an additional amount of dust is drawn by suction through the passage-way 9 into the space above the well 8. The heavier particles of dust then fall to the bottom of the well 8, from which they are conducted by the conveyer 19. The lighter particles of dust pass through the passage-way 14 into the conduit 13 and therefrom into the fan housing 16, from which they are delivered to any desired point.
20 designates a funnel-shaped rear well located within the purifying-chamber and the rearmost wall of which is separated both from Athe rear wall of the purifier-casing and from the top of said casing to provide a passage-way21, that is controlled byaforwardlyclosing valve 22, operatable from the exterior of the purifier. The rear well 20 has communication with the forwardly-extending dust-conduit 13', which is in reality a continuation of the rearwardly-extending dust-conduit 13, through a passage-way 23, that is controlled by a forwardly-closing valve 24, operatable from the exterior of the purifier. The particles of dust that are not picked up at the feed or forward end of the purifier in the manner previously explained are in the main drawn by the suctional action of the fan 18 through the passage-way 21 and pass into the rear well 20, the heavier particles descending in the rear well and being discharged therefrom by a bottom conveyer 25, while the lighter particles pass IOO IIC
.through the screens of the bolt 29.
through the passage-.way 23 and forwardlyeXtending conduit 13 into the fan-housing 16. 26 is an extended tailings-spout having communication at about its middle part with the purifier-chamber A through an orifice 1EL in the rear wall of the purifier-casing. Particles of dust that pass through said orifice into the tailings-spout are drawn by suction through a passage-way27, located at the top thereof, that is controlled by a forwardlyclosing valve 28, operatable from the exterior of the purifier,`whereby the dust is caused to traverse the rear well 20 and be drawn into the forwardly-extending conduit 13 and therefrom into the fan-housing 16.
It will be readily understood that the various valves controlling the dust passageways may be so set or partly closed by the operator of the purifier as to gain the best results in the extraction of the dust from the middlings at the various points provided for such extraction.
29 designates a bolt that is located below the described parts within the purifier-chamber and is provided with a screen 30. The bolt is inclined downwardly and rearwardly, as usual, and its rear end is arranged to operate in the tailings-orifice 1a. Reciprocatory motion is imparted to the bolt by any desired means or means ordinarily employed for such purpose, and the screens of the bolt are made, as usual, of sections of graduallydecreasing fineness of mesh, the finest mesh being located at the middlings-receiving end of the bolt.
32 is a movable wiper-brush located beneath theV screen 30.
Locatedl beneath the bolt 29 is a series of hoppers 34, 35, and 36, into which the various grades of middlings descends after passligng etween the bolt and said hoppers is a reciprocatory regulator 37, that may be operated by any suitable means and preferably by the same means that serves to reciprocate the bolt 29. The rear end of the regulator is arranged to operate in an aperture 1b beneath the tailings-orifice 1a in the rear wall of the casing. The regulator 37 has a bottom member 38, that is provided with a plurality of apertures 39, preferably elongated. The bottom member y3S is surrounded by a wall 40, that is beveled upon its inner face, and also by grooved transversely-extending guidestrips 41 and longitudinally-extending triangular partition-ribs 42 the latter of which surmount and cross the guide-strips.
43 are slide-valves that are operatable between' and in the guide-strips 41 and are provided with apertures 44, that are adapted to register' with the apertures 39 in the bottom member of the regulator or are adapted to be positioned either in whole or in part beneath the partition-ribs 42 for the purpose of obstructing the passage of material through said apertures 39. The valves 43 may be so regulated that any desired quantity of middlings which falls upon the regulator may be delivered into each of the foremost hoppers 34 and 35, according to the desire of the operator and the grade of middlings he wishes to secure from said hoppers, and the middlings which does not pass through the regulator and into the foremost hopper or hoppers will be carried rearwardly and discharged into the succeeding hopper, according to the setting of the valves above them.
For the purpose of regulating the degree of suctional action within the purifier and through the tailings-orifice 1a l provide at such orifice a vertical slide-valve 26. It will be seen that this valve may be set, according to the nature of the middlings, that only sufficient opening will be present for the escape of the tailings into the tailings-spout, and therefore a strong suction may be maintained in said spout to withdraw dust therefrom into the conduit 13.
