FOLDlNG STAKE FOR RAlLWAY -CARS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
l-ratented April 16, 1907.
Application filed November 23,1906. Serial No. 345,494.
To (LZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN WV. KnNDRIoK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ohicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illi- 1101s, have invented certain new and useful Improveinents in Folding Stakes for Railway Cars, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to stakes for railwaycars, and has for its object to provide an improved stake which. may be folded down flush with the floor of the car in operative position.
With this and other objects, which. will hereinafter appear, in view my invention consists in the combinations and details hereinafter set forth and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved stake. .l ig. 2 is a top plan view of a portion of the floor of the car, showing the stake in folded position. Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line 3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a similar view showing the stake in operative position. Fig. 5 is a sectional view on the line 5 of Fig. 1.
It is very desirable to provide fiat-cars with stakes which may be used when the cars are loaded with lumber or like material. As is well known, when flat-cars are used for this purpose the provision of stakes is a troublesome matter, some roads requiring that these stakes be provided by the shipper. With my invention a flat-car may be provided with side stakes which may readily be folded down across the floor of the car and received in the recesses therein so as to be flush with the floor and form a practical continuation thereof.
In carrying out my invention I provide a stake-pocket a, which may be secured to the side sill of the car in any preferred manner, this stake-pocket comprising two stake-re ceiving portions 0/ a one of these pockets a being adapted to receive an ordinary stake. The pocket a is rectangular in shape and of greater diameter in one direction than the other and is adapted to receive a stake I), this stake being similarly formed. It will be observed that the stake when in operative position presents its longest diameter to the load upon the car. It will be further observed that the stake-pocket is open at both ends. If it is desirable when the stake is folded that it shall present its greatest diameter longitudinally of the car, so that the recess in the floor of the car into which the stake is received may be of as little depth. as possible, this recess is formed by spacing apart two of the floor members h of the car, as will be readily understood.
In order that the stake may be permanently connected to the pocket, I provide at the lower end of the stake a perforated ear 0, to which is attached a chain 0, connected at its lower end to an eye chformed by the lower end of the pocket. When the stake is placed in operative position in the pocket, the chain drops down through the open lower end to the position shown in Fig. 4. When the stake is raised and turned to be placed. into the re* cess, the chain assumes the position shown in Fig. 3. In order to detachably secure the opposite or free end of the stake to the opposite side of the car, I provide the stake at this end with a hasp d, which receives a staple 6, attached to the side sill of the car, and a hook f, connected to the side of the car bya chain f, enters the staple to hold the stake in position. This hook may, if desired, be provided with an opening for the reception of a seal to pregenlt the unauthorized withdrawal of the The operation of my improved stake will be readily understood without further de scription.
I claim- 1. A railway-car having a transverse recess across ts floor, a stake-pocket adjacent one end of the recess, a stake removably mounted in the pocket, and a flexible connection between the end of the stake and the end of the pocket.
2. A railway-car having a transverse recess in its floor, a stake removably mounted on the side of the car and resting in said recess when in operative position, a permanent connection between one end of the stake and the side of the car, and a detachable connection between the opposite end of the stake and the side of the car.
JOHN W. KENDRIOK.
