Be it known that I, PETER J. PAULY, J r., a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Louis, State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Closet- Seats, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.

My invention has relation to improvements in closet-seats,- and it consists in the -novel construction of seat more fully set forth in the specification and pointed out in the claims.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a niche formed in the rear wall of a j ailcell, showing my invention applied. Fig. 2 is a top plan of the seat, the walls of the niche of the cell being in section. Fig. 3 is a vertical cross-section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a vertical longitudinal section on line 4 4 of Fig. 2, and Fig. 5 is an enlarged sectional detail on line 5 5 of Fig. 2.

The object of my invention is to provide a sanitary closet-seat for prisoners confined in cells, special attention being had to the prevention of accumulation of dirt or germs of disease.

A further object is to construct a seat which will drain any and all matter which may accidentally lodge thereon into the bowl for which such matter was intended.

A further object is to provide the seat with suitable formations which will prevent contact of the body of the user with the adjacent walls of the cell or niche containing the closet.

A further object is to provide such a seat with a polished, enameled, or glazed surface incapable of housing germs of disease, all as will more fully hereinafter appear from a detailed description of the invention, which is as follows:

Referring to the drawings, C represents a section of a prison-cell, and N a niche in the rear wall thereof, within which niche the closet is located. The seat may be considered as formed of two distinct sections, the bottom section or plate 1 forming the bottom wall of the niche N and secured to the side and rear walls of said niche by an anglebar 2 and an upper or top section 3, whose walls slope toward the central opening of the seat to effectively drain any water lodging thereon toward the opening and into the bowl B, located below the plate 1. The slope of the walls of the section 3 is important, for when the seat is washed the water will automatically drain into the bowl. The draining referred to is made complete and positive by the central depending flange 4, said flange being of sufficient dimension to overlap the thickness of the plate 1 around the opening formed therein.

The plate 3 is provided with an upwardlyextending marginal rim 5 at the sides and back, snugly engaging the corresponding walls of the niche N and rising to a sufficient height to prevent contact of the body of the prisoner with said walls, and since the area of actual contact is covered with a surface or layer of enamel e (the upper seat-section being, in fact, a casting coated with enamel on the order of porcelain ware) it follows that a seat of this character is thoroughly sanitary. To prevent contact of the body with the front flange 1 of the section 1, the upper sec tion is provided with a depending apron 6, it being understood that the entire surface of the parts 3 4t 5 6 is covered with enamel, (or an equivalent coating.) The upper section is provided with a series (preferably four) of bosses 7, which are subsequently drilled and tapped for screws, the latter securing the plate 3 to the plate 1, the screws being proper y countersunk, as shown in the drawings, Fig. 5. A

A seat of the character described can be kept clean and will not harbor germs of disease, and for jails and prisons it serves an admirable purpose. The flange 4 of course prevents contact of the body with the plate 1, so that the body of the person using the seat only comes in contact with the enameled surface of the upper seat-section.

Having described my invention, what I claim is 1. In combination with the walls of a niche, a closet-seat having a central opening, and a marginal rim extending upwardly and. engaging the walls of the niche to a suitable distance, to prevent contact of the body of the person on the seat with said niche-walls, substantially as set forth.
