Description

v No. 847,586:
APPLICATION TILED'NOV'. 4, 1905.
Witnesses At torneys PATRICK J. KELLYOF ELIZABETH, NEW JERSEY.
THREAD-CUTTING TOOL FOR LATHES.
Specification of LettersPatent.
Patented March 19, 1907.
Application filed November 4, 1905. Serial No. 285,909.
To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, PATRICK J. KELLY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Elizabeth, in the county of Union-and State of New Jersey, have invented new and useful Thread-Cutting Tools for Lathes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to thread-cutting tools for lathes, and has for an object to provide a device of the class embodying new and improved features of adaptability, economy, accuracy, and efliciency.
A further object of the invention is to pro vide a thread-cutting tool embodying a chaser of improved construction and provided with a plurality of spaced thread-cutting teeth.
A further object of the invention is to provide a thread-cutting tool embodying improved means for securing the chaser at various angular adjustments relative to the holder.
With these and other objects in view the present invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described, shown in the accompanying drawings, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims, it being under stood that changes in the form, proportion, size, and minor details may be made without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a top plan view of the improved thread-cutting tool with the chase set at an angle and shown in outline as a straight tool. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the tool with the chaser-teeth at one side and shown in outline at a reverse angle. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view of the tool, taken on line 3 3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal sectional view of a modified form of holder wherein the chaser-holder is short and secured to the end of a round toolshank and shown with the chaser positioned as in Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the chaser of the improved tool.
Like characters of reference designate corresponding parts in all of the figures of the drawings.
In its preferred embodiment the improved thread-cutting tool forming the subject-matter of this application comprises a rectangular chaser 10, having one side beveled and provided along the beveled side with spaced cutter-teeth 11 and with a furrow 12 formed in the upper surface and cutting the upper ends of the teeth. The chaser is provided with a central openmg 13, and the sides 14, 15, and 16 are equidistant from the central opening, as are also the corners 17 and 18.
A holder 19 is provided having a reentrant right-angular recess 20, the lower Wall of which is parallel with the length of the holder. The side wall is provided with a right-angular groove 21. The side wall is positioned to contact with either of the sides 14, 15, or 16 and the groove to receive either corner 17 or 18.
The bottom of the recess 20 is provided with a screw-threaded opening 22, in which is engaged a screw 23, by which the chaser is secured rigidly upon the holder at either of the several positions indicated, whereby the tool is adapted for outside, inside, or offset threading.
Having thus described the invention, What is claimed is 1. The combination of a chaser-holder comprising a bar provided with a transverse wall having a right-angular groove intermediate its ends, with a chaser having cuttingteeth on one of its sides and a plurality of right-angularly-disposed walls, and means arranged to adj ustably secure the chaser on the holder with any of its said walls or corners between the walls engaging respectively the transverse wall of the holder or the groove therein.
2. A thread-cutting tool embodying a rectangular chaser provided with cutting-teeth spaced along one side and with the other sides equidistant from a central opening, a holder comprising a bar provided at one end with a recess proportioned to accommodate the chaser and having a wall positioned for con tact with either of the equidistant sides or the corners of the chaser and means passing through the central opening to hold the chaser in rigid contact with the wall.
3. A thread-cutting tool embodying arectangular chaser provided with cutting-teeth spaced along one side and with the other sides equidistant from a central opening, a holder comprising a bar provided at one end with a reentrant right-angular recess having a right* 1 my own I have hereto afiixed my signature in inlgulai groove formed in its side Wall imd a the presence of two Witnesses.
o t t rough the central 0 ening o the 1 chaser and arranged to selectir ely hold either i PArl RICK KELIA" of the equidistant sides in contact with the 1 Witnesses: wall and the corners Within the groove. WILLIAM KALLENBAGI-r,
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as JAMES A. SOHULTIES.
