f/VVENTOR A TTORNE VS thereof in section,
KIRBY SMITH LITTLE, OF CONQVER, NORTH CAROLINA.
PIPE AND MONKEY WRENCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented March 19, 1907.
Application filed January 31, 1907. Serial No. 355,122.
To alt w/wm Lt may concern;
Be it known that I, KIRBY SMITH LITTLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Conover, in the county of Catawba and State of North Carolina, have invented a new and useful Pipe and Monkey Wrench, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has relation to combined pipe and monkey wrenches; and it consists in the novel construction and arrangement of its parts, as hereinafter shown and described.
The object of the invention is to provide a wrench comprising a fixed jaw attached to a handle-stock and a movable jaw slidably mounted thereon with a rotatable screw engaging the latter jaw for moving the same. A spring means of special construction. and arrangement is attached in a peculiar manner to the stock and is adapted to engage and retain the screw, whereby the same is held against rotation and the movable jaw is relatively fixed upon the stock. A press-button is located upon the wrench and attaches with said spring and is adapted to be used to disengage the spring from the screw in order that the same may be rotated.
in the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a side elevation of the wrench with parts and Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view of the wrench cut on the line 2- 2 of Fig. 1.
The wrench comprises the stock 1, which is provided at one end with a fixed jaw 2, said jaw having at its work-engaging surface a recess 3, which is adapted to receive and retain a pipe when the implement is used as a pipe-wrench. The sliding jaw 4 is mounted upon the stock 1 and is provided with the usual screw-threaded perforation 5. The collar 6 is fixed upon the stock 1, as is also the handle-grip 7 and the ferrule 8, which is held in place by the screw 9 which passes therethrough and engages the end of the stock 1. The stock 1 is provided with a longitudinally-extending groove 10, the major portion of which lies under the collar 6 and the handle-grip 7. The flat spring 11 is fixed at one end to the stock 1 in the vicinity of the ferrule 8 and lies in the groove 10. The opposite or free end of the said spring 11 is provided with the angle portion 12, which lies beyond the inner end of the collar 6. The shank of the push-button 13 passes transversely through the collar 6 and is attached to the spring 10. The shaft of the screw 14 is journaled at one end in the collar 6, while the said screw engages the threaded perforation 5 of the jaw 4. The said screw 14 is provided with the toothed head 15, which lies adjacent the inner end of the collar 6, and is retained in proper condition with relation to the said collar by the clip 16, attached to the shank 1 and having a recess which receives the circular portion 17 of the screwshaft. The end portion 12 of the spring 11 normally engages teeth of the head 15 and retains the same and the screw 14. against rotation when, as will be observed, the movable jaw 4 is fixed upon the shank 1. In order to move the said jaw upon the said shank, the push-button 13 is depressed, which disengages the end portion 12 from the head 15, when the screw 14 may be rotated and the jaw 4 moved thereby longitudinally of the shank 1.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A wrench comprising a stock having a fixed jaw at one end and at its opposite end a longitudinally-extending groove, a jaw slidably mounted upon said stock, a collar surrounding the stock, a screw journaled for rotation upon the collar and engaging said movable jaw and having a toothed head, a spring located in the groove of the stock and having an end which engages said head and a press-button passing through the collar and engaging said spring.
2. A wrench comprising a stock having a jawfixed thereto at one end, a collar surrounding said stock, a movable jaw located upon the stock, a screw located between said collar and said movable jaw and having a toothed head, a spring located under the collar and enga ing said head and a pushbutton passing through the collar and engaging said spring.
3. A wrench comprising a stock having a fixed jaw, a collar surrounding said stock, a jaw slidably mounted upon the stock, a screw located between the collar and the movable jaw and having a toothed head with an adjacent circular portion, a clip attached my own I have hereto afiiXed my signature to th; stock and engaging said circular porl in the presence of two Witnesses. tion or retainin t 1e screw in osition, a 7 spring located un cler the collar an d engaging KIRB1 SMITH LITTLE 5 said head and a press-button passing through Witnesses:
the collar and engaging said spring. T. F'. SMITH, In testimony that I claim the foregoing as l L. F. WITHERSPOON.
