Be it known that I, SAMUEL E. BUNToN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Van Horn, in the county of El Paso and State of Texas, have invented new and useful Improvements in Wire Stretching and Twisting Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.

My invention has relation to a wire stretching and twisting apparatus; and it consists in the construction and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.

In the accompanying drawings the figure is a perspective view of a tool embodying the invention.

Referring to the drawing, it will be seen that the improved tool comprises a body portion or shank 1, having atits ends oppositelyextending right-angularly-disposed portions or arms 2 and 3, formed integral with the shank 1, said arm 3 being wedge-shaped, the arm 2 being provided at its outer end with a claw 4 and at its inner end with a roughened enlargement or head 5, While the arm 3, which is provided between its endswith a plurality of spaced openings or perforations 6, has its longitudinal side walls convergently tapered from its inner toward its outer end and terminating at the latter ina sharpened engaging point 7.

In practice the claw 4 is utilized for extracting nails or staples from the fence-posts, while the head 5 may be brought into action for driving such fasteners into the posts, the arm 3 being employed in the operations of stretching or twisting the wire, it being ap parent that in the wire-stretching operation the ends of the wire engage the arm 3 through the openings 6 and the point 7 engaged with a post or other fixed body to serve as a fulcrum on which the arm swings by means of the arm 2 in performing the stretching action. Further, it will be noted that by engaging the point 7 with the post and entering the wire through the openings 6 the wire may be properly drawn and twisted around the post, after which the tool may be readily withdrawn owing to the longitudinal sides of the arm being tapered throughout the entire length of the latter. It is also to be noted that the arm 3 may be utilized for digging the post-holes or for cleaning and en larging old holes, and, further, that in the use of the tool and owing to the arms 2 and 3 being extended in reverse directions from the shank either of said arms may be utilized as a handle to be grasped by the operator, thereby augmenting the leverage exerted on the other arm in performing its function, while at the same time the length of the tool. as a whole is minimized.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

A wire-stretching apparatus comprising a shank having arms at right angles therewith, one of said arms being constructed in wedgeshaped form and provided witha sharpened terminal serving to be driven into a support to provide a fulcrum, said arm being also provided with a plurality of openings for the reception of fence-wires, the other arm of the shank serving to swing the wedge-shaped arm to permit of the stretching of the wire, substantially as specified.
