Description

PATENTED MAR. 12, 1907. M. E. MoBEE. FAN HANGER.
Attorney [NVENTOR Marshall E. JHPBee.
APPLICATION FILED MAY 11. 1906.
MARSHALL E. MoBEE, or ALTO, TEXAS.
FAN-HANGER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented March 12, 1907.
Application filed May 11, 1906. Serial No. 816,312.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARSHALL E. McBEE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Alto, in the county of Cherokee, State of,
Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fan-Hangers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to a fan-hanger, and particularly to a construction and arrangement of parts for adjustably supporting a fan from an overhead support.
The invention has for an object to provide a standard or hanger formed in two or more parts adjustable upon each other, together with means for effecting said adjustment and retaining the parts in their adjusted posi tion.
Other and further objects and advantages of the invention will be hereinafter fully set forth and the novel features defined by the appended claims.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is a side elevation of the invention. Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail vertical section, and Fig. 3 is a crosssection on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1.
Like numerals of reference indicate like parts throughout the several views of the drawings.
The numeral 1 designates a hanger or standard attached to an overhead support in any desired manner-for instance, by the flange 2 at its upper end, through which the securing bolts or screws 3 pass. This member of the hanger is fixed in position and provided with a guiding-groove 4, disposed in the extended end 5 thereof. Cooperating with the fixed member is an adjustable sec tion 6, provided with a tongue 7, adapted to ride in said groove and be retained therein by means of the clamping-band 8, secured to the portion 5 by screws 9 or other retaining devices to secure the parts in proper sliding relation. At the lower end of the adjustable section 6 securing arms or brackets 10 are attached, as shown at 11, and adapted to receive a casing 12, containing the motor of a fan 13, which motor and fan may be of any desired construction, preferably spring-driven or propelled.
The parts of the hanger may be adjusted and held by any desired means, preferably the form which is herein shown, which comprises a shaft 14, mounted in a suitable bearing 15 in the hanger 1 and having secured thereto acord or cable 16, connected to an eye 17, carried by the upper end of the adjustable section 6 of the hanger. This shaft is provided with an operating-handle 18 of any desired construction and is adapted to be retained in its adjusted position by means of a set-screw 19, threaded through a bracket 20, carried by the hanger, said screw being provided with an operating-head 21, adapted to pass through the aperture 22, formed in the shaft or a suitable recess therein. The hanger is provided with a chamber or recess 23 to receive the cable 16 and also the connecting means upon the upper end of the adjustable section.
In the operation of the invention it will be seen that this hanger provides means by which the fan may be adjusted at any desired height in the room or apartment where it is used and retained in such position, while the adjusting means permit the fan to be readily lowered for any desired purpose. The tongue-andgroove connection between the two sections of the hanger prevents any rotary or oscillatory movement thereof due to the driving strain of the fan and forms an absolutely rigid structure free from vibrations in the movement of the fan. The securing means also positively holds the hangershaft against any rotation, so that the fan may be retained at a fixed elevation as long as it is desirable. By using the fan near the top of an apartment it is available for ventilating purposes, while if it is lowered the current or air may be thrown upon the occupants of the room for cooling purposes or to prevent annoyance from insects.
Having now described my invention and set forth its merits, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a fanhanger, a fixed section provided with means for supporting the same, an adjustable section mounted thereon for sliding movement, an elevating-shaft journaled in the fixed section, and a cable connection from said shaft to the top of the adjustable section.
2. In a fan-hanger, a fixed section provided with means for supporting the same, an adjustable section mounted thereon for sliding movement, an elevating-shaft carried by the fixed section, a cable connection from said shaft to the adjustable section, a bracket carried by the fixed section, and holding means carried by said bracket to engage said shaft.
3. In a fan-hanger, a fixed sectionprovided with means for supporting the same,
an adjustable section mounted thereon for sliding movement, an elevating-shaft carried by the fixed section, a cable connection from said shaft to the adjustable section, a bracket carried by the fixed section, and a set-screw threaded through said bracket and into said shaft.
4. A fan-hanger comprising a fixed head having securing means thereon and a depending portion, an adjustable section mounted to slide u on said depending portion, a tongue-an -groove connection between said depending portion and adjustable section, and means upon the fixed section for adjusting and retaining said adjustable section'.
5. A fan-hanger comprising a fixed head having a depending portion at one side thereof, an adjustable section mounted beneath the remaining portion of the head to slide upon said depending portion, and means journaled in said head and connected to the section for raising and lowering the same.
6. In a fan-hanger, a head having a reces'se'd portion and a depending section provided at one side of the recessed portion, a cooperating adjustable section, an operatingshait having a bearing in the head, and a cable connection disposed upon said shaft within said recess and connected to the top of the adjustable section.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
MARSHALL E. MGBEE.
