UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM HALLINAN, OF CENTRAL CITY, KENTUCKY, AssrGNoR or ONE- THIRD TO GEORGE BAKER AND ONE-THIRD TO SHELBY GISH, OF CEN- TRAL CITY, KENTUCKY.
AUGER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented March 5, 1907.
Application filed July 27. 1906. Serial No. 328.049.
To @ZZ whom t may concern,.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM HALLINAN, citizen of the United States, tral City, in the county of Muhlenberg and f State of Kentucky, have invented new and useful Improvements in Angers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates, broadly, to angers, and more particularly to that class of angers used by miners in boring holes in the face of the coal preparatory to inserting the charge of powder or other explosive, as the case may be, and the object of my invention is to provide a construction which will overcome certain objectionable qualities of miners angers now in use.
In producing a construction of this character I provide an auger of the same size and shape as is now used having detachable cutting blades or bits; and my invention is embodied in this and in certain simple and convenient means for operatively associata l residing at Cening the said blades with the anger proper. In sharpening the single-piece auger of common use necessarily means that the auger is reduced in length until it is too short for use, when a new one must be procured. This my improvements will do away with and an auger may last a lifetime. I also cbviate the necessity of carrying the auger ont of the mine each time it needs sharpening or tempering, and I also provide that only7 one auger need be had, inasmuch as the different characters of angers, diamond pointed, square-pointed, and others may be included in detachable bits as herein provided.
I will now describe my improvements in detail, reference being made to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is an elevation of a portion of an auger, showing the application of the invention. Fig. 2 is an elevation showing one of the bits removed from the anger. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the bit detached. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the fastening means for the bi Referring to the figures, 1 indicates an auger as commonly used., ending in the twisted point 2. Centrally located and eX- tending through said end 2 is an opening 3,
bits registering with having a slot 4 cut in the bore thereof. The
faces of the end 2 are also provided with a plurality of recesses 7 of any desirable shape.
In my drawings I have shown three recesses of a square shape but it is obvious that their number and shape, also the number and shape of the register-lugs hereinafter described, is immaterial and may be varied at will.
8 and 9 represent the cutting blades or bits, adapted to fit one on either of the faces of end 2 and being of a size and shape as Will correspond to the auger. The bits 8 and 9 are provided with lugs 10, adapted to be inserted in the recesses 7, and said bits have also central openings 12, adapted to register with the opening 3 of the end 2 of the auger. The openings 12 of the bits are provided with slots 14, adapted to aline with the slot 4 of opening 3 in the auger.
15 is a bolt, screw-threaded at 16 on one end, said bolt being adapted to be inserted through openings 3 and 12 and being provided with a feather 17, adapted to enter the slots 4 and 14 in said openings.
18 is a nut adapted to engage upon threads 16 of bolt 15 to bind the bits 8 and 9 tightly to the auger.
In assembling my improved auger the bits 8 and 9 are placed against the faces of the end 2 of the auger, the lugs 10 of said bits entering the recesses 7 and the openings 12 of said opening 3 of said auger. The bolt 15 is then inserted through said openings and the nut 18 screwed thereon to clamp the bits in position, and it will be seen that by reason of the feather 17 and the slots 4 and 14 and also by reason of the lugs and recesses the bits 8 and 9 will be held from any movement other than that common with the auger l.
I claim*- In a device of the character described, the combination with an auger provided on one end with a plurality of recesses and a central opening, of detachable bits for said auger, a plurality of lugs carried by said bits and registering with said recesses, said bits being provided with openings registering with said opening in said auger, a bolt passing through said openings to clam said bits in position, said openings in said its and said auger be- IOO ing provided with alined slots, and a longii In testimony whereof I have signed my tudinal shoulder carried by said bolt, adapti name to this speo'reation in the presence of ed to engage Within said slots and ooperatl two subscribing Witnesses.
ing with said lugs and said recesses, to pre- WILLIAM IIALLINAN. vent an independent movement of said bits Witnesses: Y when in the clamped position, substantially BEN C. BOYD, as described. W. C. COFFMAN.
