Be it known that I, ANNA W. SKINNER, of the city of ")swego, in the county of Osw ego, and in the State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful In'iprovement in ashijig Compound and Process of lilalring the'ldame, and. do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.

The object of my invention has been to provide a new and useful composition of matter to be used as a washing compound for laundry purposes and also a new and useful process of making the same; and to such ends my invention consists in'the washing compound and process of making the same hereinafter specified.

My compound preferably consists of the following ingredients, combined in the proportions stated: salt of tartar, one part; muriate of ammonia, four parts; borax, sixteen parts; paraffin, ninety-six parts.

While I prefer to use all of t 1e above ingredients in approximately the proportions stated, one or more of the ingredients can be omitted and the proportions can be largely varied without substantially affecting the efliciency of the compound.

in preparing my compound for sale I preferabl y follow the method hereinafter described. The first three ingredients are thoroughly mixed together in a dry stat ennd in a powdered form. The paraffin is melted and a portion thereof poured into a tray so as to cover the bottom thereof, and the powdered mixture of the other three ingredients is then sprinkled and distributed in any manner over the parallin, preferably while it is still fluid. The remaining fluid paraffin is then poured over the said mixture so as to completely cover the powder, the two pertions of paraffin uniting. hen the paraffin is cool, the sheet or layer thus formed. is out into blocks of convenient size for sale. The blocks enable the amount of compound to be used for a given size washing of clothes to be readily estimated. The paraflin incloses the other three ingredients and prevents their deterioration from the action of the air.

My compound is preferably used in the folowing manner: Ablock or cake of the compound is preferably melted in boiling water I together with ordinary soap, and the mixi ture thus formed added to a proper quantity of very hot water. The clothes to be washed, 1 preferably soaked, if desired, are immersed. in the water and are frequently stirred and are rubbed where necessary. After a few minutes of this treatment the clothes are thoroughly rinsed in cold or warm water, when it will be found that they will have bei come clean by the use of my composition in the manner described. The clothes do not need to be boiled, hereby permitting savihg the cost of the fuel for this purpose. The life of the clothes is increased by avoiding the necessity for boiling them. The amount of time and labor is very greatly reduced. The paraliin aids in the ironing of the clothes by lubricating the iron and causing it to slip over the clothes easily. It also gives a slight gloss to the clothes. The salt of tartar commonly so known, is carbonate of potassium. I

It is obvious that various changes can be made in the above-described composition and process which will be within the scope 1 of my invention, and I do not desire to be l limited beyond the terms of my claim and the requirements of the prior art.

I claim- 1. A washing compound comprising salt of tartar, muriate of ammonia and borax and paraffin. 2. A washing compound, 5 part of salt ammonia, sixteen parts of borax l l comprising one and ninetysix parts of paraffin. 3. The process of making a composition of matter comprising ingredients which are subject to deterioration from the air, which process consists in first forming a. layer of a moisture resisting substance such as paraflin, then the layer of said first-mentioned I substance, and then pouring over the same a layer of such moisture-resisting substance in l a melted condition. 1 In testimony that I claim the foregoing I l have hereunto set my hand. i .ANNA W.
