METAL BOX ca ova-um METAL ARTECLE s SURFACE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
PatentedJan. 29, 1907.
Application filed January 2,1906. Serial No. 294,304-
application has been made in. Great Britain,
No. 5,753, dated March 18, 1905,) of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to the protecting of ornamental or polished surfaces of metal boxes or other metal articles, and has for its object to protect the same from the action of air, moisture, acids, alkalies, or other like agencies which might corrode or otherwise injure the same or deleteriously affect the good appearance.
By my invention the surfaces are not merely preserved, but improved in appearance, and the printed, colored, or decorative matter thereon has a softer and more artistic look. Boxes and other articles treated in accordance with this invention can consequently be used for containing articles and for being placed in positions which would act on unprotected metal.
My invention consists, essentially, in providing the metal surface with a waxen coatingconsisting of a coating of any wax or mixture of waxes, whether of vegetable or mineral origin or derived from the animal kingdom. I may also use any known artificial preparation of wax or wax compounds containing cheapemng substances. As an example I have obtained very good results with the ordinary commercial paraffin (paraffin-wax) and beeswax. I
In carrying the invention into efiect the wax coating may be applied in any conven ient manner, preferably by dipping it into a hot bath of wax or mixture and allowing it to drain and dry, or the material can be put on hot with a brush or cold with any known solvent. A convenient method of procedure is to. dip, the article or surface into a bath of waxen solvent, allow itto drain and dry by hanging it up in a hot room, or I may use a centrifugal machine or other known means for this purpose.
In the accompanying drawing a sectional view of a piece of metal treated in accordance with the present invention is shown. In this, A represents the metal, B the decorative surface, and C the layer of wax-like material, the thickness in each case being somewhat exaggerated for clearness.
I declare that what I claim is- The improved process of improving and softening the appearance of ornamental and polished metal surfaces and protecting the surfaces from corrosion, which consists in the reduction of paraflin-wax to a liquid state by the application of heat thereto, covering the surface with afilm of the hot liquid wax, drying and draining the surface by submitting the same to a hot atmosphere which removes any moisture and causes the wax to flow and leave a very thin filmupon the surface, and in hardening the remaining film by cooling. l
In Witness whereof I have hereunto signed my name, this 15th day of December, 1905,
Witnesses:
EDWARD HARVEY, PAUL KNABENSHUE.
