Patented Jan. 29, 1907.
To all w/mm it TIMI/,7] concern.- 7
Be it known that I, JoHN J. PATTERSON, a citizen of the United States of America, re siding at Bellingham, in the county of What- 'com and State of Washington, haveinvented new and useful Improvements in Advertising. Signs, of which he following is a specification, y
This invention relates to improvements in advertising signs or' banners, the object of the invention being to provide a simple, inex? pensive, and ornamental device of this nature which may be carried in the hand for street advertising, suitably supported in front of a store or place of business, or mount.- ed upon a poleor staff to serve the dual function of a combined sign and weather-vane.
Another object is to provide a sign which may be stuck or driven into the ground, post, or stump, and which is adapted to permit free revolution of the sign-banner to adapt it to be conveniently'carried.
The figure of the drawing is a side elevation, partly in section, of a sign embodying my in vention and adapted to serve the additional function of a weathcr-vane.
Referring to the drawing, 1 designates the staif of the device, which consists of a rod having a lower conical or pointed end 2 and an upper-threaded end 3, On this staff are'uper and lower stationaryoollars 4 "and 5, the
ower collar being fixed to the stafi in any' preferred manner, while the upper collar 4 is formed with a socketto engage the threaded end 3 and carries a spear-head or suitable;
crown ornament 6.
Bearings 7 and 8 are revolubly mounted upon the rod, respectively, below the collard and above the-collar 5 and are provided at one side with short slotted 'or bifurcated arms 9, which receive the upper and lower inner 'cor neredges ,of the sign board or banner .10, which may be made .of wood, sheet'metal, or
other suitable: material, said banner being rigidly fastened to the arms by bolts or rivets 1 1-. The sides of the banner may be suitably ornamented and carry any desired. advertis ing or other sign matter for display.'
The meeting faces of the collars and bear- 'ings are provided with mating grooves )to form racewavs, in which travel fant'ifriction Apelication filed March 17, 1906. Serial No. 306.606.
havefree and easy rotary motion on the staff under the action of the wind. Projecting reai'wardly from the bearings 7 and 8 are converging arms 13, which are-connected at their outer ends and carry a spear-head or other suitable ornament 14.- These arms, with the ornament 14, form the tail portion of a combined sign board or banner and weather-vane which the construction is designed to provide. in one direction or the other under theaction of the wind, the sign matter upon thereverse sides thereof will be effectively displayed, as will be readily understood.
p The drawing also shows a preferred mode As the banner 10 swings" being provided with a socket lfi to receive the loweriend of the staff] the lower end of the socket being ofconical form to conform to the shape of the lower end of the staff. A' clamping-band 17 embraces the upper end of the pole and is adapted to contract the same to a sufficient exent to hold the firmly within the socket. 3
The ointed end 2 not only permits the sign to Be pole, but also adapts the sign. to be stuck or driven into the earth or into .stumps',xlogs,'
and other similar supports, thus; adapting the sign to be conveniently mounted along country highways.
Having thus described the invention, what I is claimed as new is 4 A si' ncomprising a staff having a lower pointe end and .an n per threaded end,- stationa'ry bearingmemgbrs on the stafi, one
above the other, the upper bearing member being formed with athr'eadedsocket engagconveniently inserted in a socketed staffclampe'd big the upper threaded endof the staff'and having a. crown ornament, upper and lower revoluble bearing.- members onthe staff. ar-
members, said revoluble bearing .f members.. being' provided Withslotted supporting-arms.
projectingfrom one side thereof, a sign-bannef having its upper. and lower'rearcorners ranged respectively. below and above-said ffisjsx idin'said"slotted arms, and converging In testimony whereof I afiix my signature n integfial' vgi'tg and firpgfecgng fnom'jzhe in presence of two witnesses. mp o sitsi e 0 e revou' e eating mem, 1 k ibel s, said armsbeingconnect'ed at their outeri JOHK PATTERSON 5" ends ahdh'avin'g an ornamentd terminal and VVitnessns:
