UNITED STATES JOHN M. SIAS, OF MYRA, WEST VIRGINIA.
NUT-LOCK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 22, 1907.
Application filed June 12, 1906. Serial No. 321,308.
T0 aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J OHN M. SIAs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Myra, in the county of Lincoln and State of West Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Nut-Locks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention has relation to new and useful improvements in nut-locks, having for their object to provide suitable means whereby the nut when screwed on a bolt is prevented from turning of itself or from being turned until the locking means is released from its engagement with the bolt.
With these ends in view my invention consists in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts as set forth in the specification and claims hereunto attached.
In the accompanying drawings, in which like parts are designated by like characters throughout the several views, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a screw-bolt and nut thereon having the improvement applied. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view of the improvement and also of a bolt-body and nut there on, to which the nut-lock is applied and represented in a locked position. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal vertical sectional view of a construction of nut I employ in carrying out my invention, the pivoted pawl being removed. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of the pawl.
Myinvention is described as follows: The numeral 1 represents the bolt, which may have any dimensions, and its threaded body may be cut with a coarse or fine thread, as desired, the nut 2, that contains certain features of the improvement, being threaded to fit it for a screwed engagement with the thread of the bolt. Said bolt is also provided at its threaded end with a series of longitudinal grooves 3, (see Figs. 1 and 2,) which grooves preferably extend the entire length of said thread. Said nut 2 is 'provided in one of its ends with a longitudinal recess 4, and secured at one end in said recess by any suitable means is a flat elongated spring 5, having a sufficient degree of flexibility and provided near its free end with a longitudinal slot 6, the purpose of which will be hereinafter shown. Said nut is also provided at the center of its width near the corner thereof adjacent the free end of said spring 5 with a suitable elbow-opening 7, which extends from the recess 4 in one of the ends of said nut downward and outward and connects with the adjacent end of said nut, (see Figs. 2 and 3,) and pivoted vertically in said opening by a pivot-pin 8, secured transversely in transverse perforations 9, also located near the corner of said nut adjacent the free end of said spring 5, is a pawl 10, provided at its extreme inner end with a tapering inwardly-extending toe 11. Said pawl is also provided with an upper vertical part or extension 12, which terminates at its upper end in a vertical neck 13, having a transverse head 14, leaving shoulders 15 at the lower end of said vertical neck. When said pawl is in its normal or locked position on the threaded end of said bolt 1, the upper end of said pawl passes through said longitudinal slot 6 in the free end of said spring 5, the under face of said spring 5 bears on said shoulders 15 thereof, and the said tapering toe 11 of the pawl engages in one of the longitudinal grooves of said bolt.
To secure the nut in position on the bolt, it is screwed to the right on the threaded end of said bolt until it has reached the desired point along the length of the thread, during which operation the said toe 11 of said pawl 10 is thrown alternately in and out of'engagement with the longitudinal grooves of the bolt and the upper end of said pawl alternately raised and lowered, which in turn raises and lowers accordingly .the free end of said spring 5. The interlocking engagement of the said toe 11 of said pawl 10 with the adjacent longitudinal groove in the threaded end of said bolt 1 is enforced by the action of said spring 5, holding the nut from rotation in a reverse direction.
To remove the nut from the bolt, Iraise the free end of said spring, which in turn raises the upper end of said pawl and throws the toe thereof out of engagement with the adj acent groove and turn the nut in a reverse direction from that in screwing it on the bolt.
Having described my. invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a nut-lock, the combination of a threaded bolt having a series of longitudinal grooves; a nut, having a longitudinal recess in one end and an elbow-opening near one corner communicating with the recessed end and one of the adjacent ends thereof, said nut adapted to screw on the threaded end of said bolt an elongated spring, secured at one end in the recessed end of said nut and having a longitudinal slot in its opposite end, and a pawl, terminating at its inner end in a taper- IIO v ing toe and having a vertical part having shoulders and terminating at its upper end in a vertical neck provided with a transverse head, pivoted in said elbow-opening of said nut, the neck of said pawl passing through the longitudinal slot in said spring, the toe of said pawl being adapted to be held in interlocking engagement with one of the grooves of said bolt by the action of said spring and hold the nut against rotatable displacement, substantially as shown and described and for the purposes set forth.
2. In a nut-lock, the combination of a threaded bolt having one or more longitudinal grooves; a nut, provided with a longitu dinal recess in one end and an elbow-opening communicating with the recessed end and one of the adjacent ends thereof, said nut adapted to screw on the threaded end of said bolt; a spring, secured in the recessed end of sa1d nut at one end and provided in its free end with a longitudinal slot, and a pawl, terminating at its inner end in a tapering toe and having an upper vertical part provided with shoulders and terminating at its upper end in a vertical neck having a transverse head, pivoted in said elbow opening of said nut, the neck of said pawl passing through the longitudinal slot of said spring and the toe of said pawl being adapted to be thrown in interlocking engagement with one of the grooves of said bolt, by said spring and hold the nut against rotatable displacement, substantially as shown and described and forthe purposes set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
JOHN M. SIAS.
