Description

UNITED STAEE np g'ijnivi? OFFICE.
RICHARD H. MACOLERNAN, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO CONTRACTORS WAGON COMPANY, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYL- VANIA, A CORPORATION OF PENNSYLVANIA.
DUMP-WAGON.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented J an. 22, 1907'.
Application filed May 29,1906. Serial. No. 319,250.
T0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RICHARD I-I. MACCLER NAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Philadelphia, inthe county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dump-Wagons, of which the following is a specification.
My invention has relation to dump-wagons, and in such connection it relates particularly to the construction 4and arrangement of the doors forming the movable bottom for box of the wagon and of means for engaging the doors and supporting the flaring boards of the wagon-box. y
The principal objects of my invention are, first, to shape the doors and bars secured to `the sides of the wagon-box so as to permit the doors to directly engage the bars, and thus to dispense with the use of hinges for such purpose; second, to provide the doors with openings through which the bars are inserted to connect the same with the doors j third, to provide the doors with a flange to strengthen the same at their pivotal ends and to receive the openings for the bars; fourth, to bend the bars at their lower ends to form hooks so as to engage the fianges of the doors, and, fifth, to shape the bars at their upper ends so as to permit of the support of the iaring boards of the wagon-box by the same.
The nature and scope of my invention will be more fully understood from the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, forming part hereof, in which- Figure l is a view illustrating in side elevation a dump-wagon with thedoors in an open position and bars for supporting the doors and iiaring boards of the wagon-box embodying main features of my said invention. Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional view of the dump- Wagon with the doors in a closed position; and Fig. 3 is a detail view, enlarged, illustrating perspectively a portion of one of the doors and one of the bars supporting the same.\y y
Referring to the drawings, a represents the dump-wagon, the wagon-box bv of which is provided on the upper sides b at the upper portion thereof-with outwardly-flaring boards b2, so as to increase the load-carrying capacity of the wagon a. The bottom of the wagon-box b is formed by doors c and c', which in the present instance consists of sheets of metal which are prevented from bending and buckling under the stress of a load resting thereon, preferably by transversely-arranged channel-irons d and longitudinally-arranged channel-irons e, located adjacent to the abutting ends of the doors c and c. The channel-irons@ may be further strengthened by tubes e placed therein, which also serve to receive and guide the chain f, by means of which the doors c and c are raised and supported at their abutting ends in the usual well-known manner.
In order to still further simplify the construction of the dump-wagon a and to dispense with the use of hinges to connect the doors c and c with the sides t of the wagonbox l), each of the doors is provided with openings c3, which in the present instance are arranged in right-angular extensions c2 thereof'. To the sides b of the wagon-boxb are secured bars h, preferably consisting of fiat strips of metal at their lower ends bent outward and upward to form hooks t, which by passing through the openings c3 of the doors c and c support the same in the manner, for example, shown 1n Figs. 2 and 3. In addition to supporting the doors c and c the bars h also serve by means of their outwardlybent upper ends h2 to partially support and hold the fiaring boards b2 in proper position with respect to the Wagon-box b and at the same time strengthen the sid es t thereof.
The right-angular extensions c2 of the doors c and c by forming fianges will strengthen the saine at the ends contiguous to the sides t of the wagon-box b.
I-Iaving thus described the nature and objects of my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by LettersPatent, is-
l. In a dump-wagon, a wagon-box, doors forming the bottom of said box and having flanges provided with openings therein and flat strips secured to the sides of said wagonbox and extending the entire width thereof, and said strips at their lower ends bent into hooks to pass through the openings in the flanges of said doors, substantially as and for the purposes described.
2. In a dump-wagon, a wagon-box, flaring boards forming extensions of the sides of said box, doors forming the bottom of said box and having flanges provided with openings In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my therein and flat strips secured to said Haring signature in the presence of two subscribing boards and sides of said box and the lower Witnesses.
ends of said strips bentl into hooks to pass L RICHARD H. MACCLERNAN.
through the openings in the flanges of said lNitnesses: doors, substantially as and for the purposes J. WALTER DOUGLAss, described. l x THOMAS M. SMITH.
