Specification of Letters Patent. l Application filed November 20,1906. Serial No. 344,322.
Patented Jan. 22.51907.
fT0 all whom t may cbncern:
Be it known that I, JOHN N. HATFIELD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Birdell, in the county of Chester and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new. s and useful Improvements in Wrenches, of which the following is a specification.
The purpose of the present invention is to devise a novel form of wrench of the class opi erating by a ratchet action.
The invention contemplates a work-holder of unique formation and operating-handle therefor and operating ratchetl mechanism between the work-holder and handle, the parts being so constructed as to insure eiliciency in operation and obviate derangement of the parts and to provide a tool of the variety aforesaid which will withstand strain and hard usage and give satisfactory results.
For a full description of the invention and the merits thereof and also to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction of' the means for effecting the result reference l is to be hadto the following description and accompanying drawings.
l/Vhile the invention may be adapted to different forms and conditionsby changes in the structure and minor details without. departing from the spirit or essential features thereof, still the preferred embodiment is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side view of the wrench embodying the invention, the head being in section on the line a; of Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is an edgeview of the wrench, the head being in section on the line y y of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a cross-section of the head portion of the wrench on the line z z of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a side view of the wrench.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings-by the same reference characters.
The wrench comprises a handle 1, which may be of any length and construction, ac-
is designed. The handle is provided at one end with a head 2, which is approximately of circular form and provided with a circular opening in which is rotatively fitted the work-holder 3. A recess 4 is provided in the head 2 and is adapted to receive a pawl 5, which coperates with the teeth. 6 of the Work-holder to impart an intermittent rostood. The pawl 5 is secured within the recess 4 by means of a pivot 7 a, and in order that the pivot-fastening 7 may be relieved. of strain the pivotal end of the pawl 5 ismade rounding and the end of the recess 4 receiving the inner end of the pawl is made of corresponding rounded form to provide a snug fit. 4
A spring 8, located within the recess 4,`
normally exerts a pressure upon the pawl 5 to hold its outer end in engagement with the teeth 6 of the work-holder.
The work-holder 3 is of circular form and is provided in opposite sides with annular openings 9 and 10 of different sizes, said openings constituting sockets'to receive nuts or suitable work to be forcibly turned in the application of the tool. A marginal portion of each side or face of the work-holder is cut away a thickness corresponding to retainers 11 and 12, which are secured to opposite sides of the head 2 and have their inner edges extended into the opening of said head, so as to overlap opposite sides of the work-holder and retain the latter in proper position. The retainers 11 and 12 are secured to the head 2 by suitable fastenings 13, which may consist of machine-screws or other attachingmeans which will admit of removal of one or both of the retainers should it be required to gain access to the work-holder for any purpose. An end portion of the work-holder is enlarged and its outer edge transversely inclined, `-as indicated at 14, the same fitting with a correspondingly enlarged or flared portion of the opening in the head 2. The smaller end of the work-holder is formed with an annular enlargement 15, which overlaps the inner projecting edge of the retainer 11. Between the two annular enlargements 14-and 15 is formed an annular depression 16, the outer surface of which is 6. It will thus be o served that the outer or active end o'f the pawl 5 operates between two spaced shoulders, which constitute stops to hold said pawl in proper relation with ref erence to the teeth 6.
The retainers 11 and 12 are circular plates or rings and are placed against opposite sides rovided with the teethv IOO IIO
of the head 2, to which they are adapted, said retainers overlapping the joint formed be-.
tween the head and work-holder and serving to prevent foreign matter finding its way between said parts and obstructing the working of the Wrench or increasing the wear of the moving parts.
A cap-piece 17 encircles the outer edge ci' the head 2, and its edge portions are inwardly bent to overlap the retainers 11 and l2, and thereby result in the provision of a neat inish between the said parts. The cap-piece conforms to the outer edge of the head 2 and is retained in place by the outward transverse convexitythereotl and by the inner bent edge portions of the cap-piece.
, Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as newisl. In a tool of the character specified, the combination of a handle having a head provided with a circular opening therein, said opening being enlarged at one end, a workholder fitted Within the opening of the head and having an end portion enlarged to snugly fit theenlarged end portion of the opening in said head, an annular enlargement ne ar the 0pposite end of said work-holder, ratchet-teeth in the annular space formed between the end annular enlargements,v the sides of the workholder being cut away for a short distance from their outer edges, retainers secured to opposite sides of the head and overlapping the joint formed between said head and the work-holder and having their inner edge portions entering the outer cut-away portions of said work-holder and a pawl itted within a recess of the head and cooperating with the teeth of the work-holder.
2. The herein-described Wrench comprising a handle having a head of approximately circular form provided with a circular opening enlarged at one endfand having a recess eX- tended into the head from the opening, a work-holder having sockets in opposite sides of dierent sizes and having the marginal portions of its sides cut away and having spaced annular enlargements near opposite ends and an annular recess between said enlargements7 ratchet-teeth being provided in said annular recess, retainers secured to opposite sides of the aforesaid head and overlapping the joint formed between said head and work-holder, a cap-piece fitted about the edge of the head and having its end portions inwardly bent to extend over the outer edges and sides cf the retainers, and a springactuated pawl fitted in the recess of the head and adapted to cooperate with the teeth of the work-hol der.
In testimony whereof I afliX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN N. HATFIELD. [L s.]
