Description

4cal ly in UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS E. JONES, OEGINEA, VIRGINIA.
FENCE-POST.
No. sai-,532.
Patented Jaa 15, 1eo7. i
To (all wit/irrt 715114/ concern: v u y Y Be it knownthat I, THOMAS E. vJo1-n.:,s, a citizen of the y,United,S 1'.ates,A residing at Guinea, in the county of Caroline and State of Virginia, have invented newand useful Improvements in Fence-Posts, of which the following is a specification.
Tliis'invention relates ,to fence-posts, the object of the invention being to provide composite posts for, the purposes eci'fied which will combine stren th and urability and which may be manu actured rapidly and economicall the complete post being practirgestructible and forming a most effective and satisfactory 4support fora fence of any description. ,A
With the above and -other objects in view, the nature of which will more fully appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated, and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings', Figure 1 is a erspective view of a fence-post constructe in accordance with the present invention. Fig. 2 is a central vertical section through the same. Fig. 3 is across-section taken in line 'with one ofthe fence-wires. Fig. 4 is a detail section through the lower portion of the post, showing a slight modification in themeans for anchoringthe post to its supporting-base. the internally-threaded member.
Like reference-numerals designate corresponding parts in all the 'figures of the draw-v mgs. A
The post contemplated in this invention und er the preferred embodiment thereof comprises an outer jacket or casin 1, which may be either square or round or o any other desired form in cross-section, a square jacket being shown in the drawings for the purpose of disclosing the nature of the invention. This outer jacket or casing may be of any desired material, such as wood or metal, the latter being preferred on account of its lastin(lr qualities. j
zFitted to the top of the post and supported on the upper end of the jacket 1 is a cap or watershed 2,. referably pyramidal in shape and eitherso id or hollow in cross-section, said cap being provided with a central vertical opening 3, through which passes a center bolt 4, b meansof which the post proper is anchore to the base.
Fig. 5 illustrates another form ofl tirely through lthe post proper and has its block of concretev or cement of any suitable bedded in the ground and the 4upper end of said base lbein s nare or flat in order that the bottom o t, e postproper may rest e lower end of the center bolt 4Vmay either be enlarged and threaded', as shown at 7 in Fig. 2, to form an anchor which engages the base, or a nut-holding cup 8 may be inserted the center bolt 4 passes.
t us drawing the post proper downward firmly against the base.
lling may extend from the base u ward entirely tothe cap 2 or at any desire distance.
tions of' t e filling 10 of the jacket which rosecurelyanchor the illing and casing or jacket together. l
'In some cases the outer jacket orcasing 1l mav be dispensed with after' the concrete body portion 10 of the post ,is formed and hardened, but ordinaril the said outer casing or jacket will be retam'ed, as it adds to the strength, durability, 'and ap earance of the post. I Where such outer jac et or casi -is dispensed with, the post should be painte or provided with some suitable protectingfcoatin t .EAnother lan is shown in Fig. 5, in which the interna ythreaded member consists cfa section of pipe 19, embedded in the base 6 of the post to receive the correspondingly. .threaded lower end of a bolt, rod, or pipe 20, which passes upward artially or wholly1 throughfthe main body o the pst.
siiarely thereon, as shown in the drawings.-A T
' `The centerbolt 4 under the preferred emr' bodiment of the invention comprises anfeye at-its upper extremity, which projects above j the cap 2. Said bolt 4 passes vertically en-.
'lower end'inserted in a base 6, consisting of avv depth, said base being nearly orquite em-A or molded in thebase 6,.as shown Fi 4, to receive an internally-threaded mem er or. nut 9, 4into which` the threaded lower end ofV The arrangement shown in Fig. l4 is ordinarily preferred for the..v reason that it enables the center bolt to be turned b placing a bar vor'lever through the-` e e 5 an sweeping said bar through a circle,
The outer jacket or casing 1 is filled with l -concrete or cement, as shown at 10, and such.
within the casing. Holes 1 1 are formed horizontally through the post to receive the fencewires 12, and the keyholes 13 are formed at various oints in thecasin to receive portrude into the holes 13 and form keys w ich IOO IIO
said casing, a cap surin'ounting the post, and
an eyeboltpassing downward .through the cap and the post proper and anchored in the base.
A post comprisin a concrete hase; a metallic casing mountei g in said casing, a cap surmounting t-lie post, a
` threaded bolt passing downward thri'iugh the cap and post and entering the base, and means within the base for engaging the threaded portion of said eyebolt.
4. A post comprisin -a concretcbase, a metallic casing mounte on said base a filling in said casing, a cap surinounting thepost, a bolt passing downward through the cap and post and entering the base,r a nut-holding cup on said base a fillingin the base and an internally-threaded ineinber within said cup engaging the threaded ylower end ofthe eyeholt. l
` said base, a concrete (illing in said jacket, a
cap s urinolinting the post, and al center bolt passing downward through the cap und fillin 1 of the post'and having its lower end threiulec and held in the hase. g
6. A post coinl'irising a concrete hase, :i metallic. jacket orcasing mounted thereon and provided with keyholes, a com-.rete filling in said post having keys which enter said holes in 4the easing, ai cap surnioiniting the post, and a center holt passing downward lthrough the cap and post und entering the inse.
[n testimony whereof l iillx in v signature in presence of two witnesses.
