WALLACE DOWNEY, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
STEAM-BOILER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 15, 1907.
Application filed May 16,1906. Serial No. 317,058.
T on whom it Wtay concern:
I Be it known that I, WALLACE DOWNEY, a
. citizen of the United States, residing in Brooklyn, in the county of Kings, State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Steam Boilers, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to secure in a steam-generator a larger amount of heatingsurface than has been possible heretofore in boilers of the same size.
Another object of my invention is to secure rapid heating by the distribution of the water into multiple tubes, which tubes are connected with one or more water-legs. By my invention I succeed also in securing a proper circulation of the steam and water in the water-tubes.
My invention consists in connecting an upper and a lower drum by means of one or more water-legs.
My invention also consists in connecting a number of Water-tubes with said water-legs.
The advantage of this construction will more particularly appear if reference be had to the accompanying drawings, which illustrate my invention.
Figure I is a front view of the boiler. Fig. II is a side sectional elevation.
A is the water and steam drum.
B is a water and sediment drum.
0 is a water-leg.
D D are water-tubes connected with said water-leg O.
E is brickwork around the base of the boiler.
F is a fireproof cover.
G is the fire-grate.
H is the fireplace.
I is a circulation-pipe.
It will be noticed that I prefer to adjust the water-tubes to the water-leg at an angle which will elevate the open ends of the tubes above the closed ends, and thus secure a better circulation of steam and water. However, said angle may be changed to suit convenience.
By reference to the drawings it will be noted that holes are provided in the drums and in the water-legs, whereby they may be cleaned.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. The combination in a steam-boiler of a lower water-drum running horizontally the length of the boiler, an upper water and steam drum running horizontally the length l of the boiler, and a continuous water-leg eX- tending horizontally the entire length of the boiler and vertically from the upper side of the lower water-drum to the lower side of the upper water and steam drum, and constructed to afford a large area for the free passage of water and steam.
2. The combination in a steam-boiler of a lower water-drum running horizontally the length of the boiler, an upper Water and steam drum running horizontally the length of the boiler, a water-leg extending horizontally the entire length of the boiler and vertically from the upper side of the lower waterdrum to the lower side of the upper waterdrum, and water-tubes connected with said water-leg on one or both sides thereof.
3. The combination in a steam-boiler of a lower water-drum running horizontally the length of the boiler, an upper water and steam drum running horizontally the length of the boiler, a water-leg extending horizontally the entire length of the boiler and vertically from the upper side of the lower Waterdrum to the lower side of the upper waterdrum, water-tubes connected with said water-leg on one or both sides thereof, and means for heating said water-tubes on either side of said water-legs, substantially as described.
4. The combination in a steam-boiler of a lower water-drum running hrizontallv the length of the boiler, an upper water and steam drum running horizontally the length of the boiler, and a continuous water-leg extending horizontally the entire length of the boiler, and vertically from the upper side of the lower water-drum to the lower side of the upper water and steam drum, adapted and constructed to connect with the upper side of the lower water-drum, and the lower side of the upper water and steam drum, in such manner as to make an aperture or water-outlet, from the lower water-drum, of an area practically the entire length of said lower Q Water-drum by the Width of the open space I said upper Water and steam drum, substan- 10 at the lower side of said Water1eg, Where it is tially as described.
attached to the said lower Water-drum, and In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my to rrlilakle an apeirtuife plr Water and steamdinlet hand this 14th day of May, 1906.
to t e 0Wer si e 0 t e u er steam an -Water drum of an area pr tically the entire WALLACE DOWNEY length of said upper steam and water drum In presence of by the width of the open space at the upper CLARENCE G. GALsTON,
side of said water-leg Where it is attached to FLORENCE B. ROY.
