To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, DOMINIO SHERLOCK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and the State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in a Folding Clothes- Rack, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to a rack for drying clothes, the clothes-line upon which the garments are hung being supported by the rack.

The object of the invention is a simple device adapted to support the clothes-line, which can be readily set up either in or out of doors and which can be folded when not in use and stored away in a small space.

With this object in view the invention consists of the novel construction hereinafter set forth, and pointed out in the claims, and

shown in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the practical application of my device. Fig. 2 is an elevation showing the device partially folded. Fig. 3 is a similar view showing the device folded and ready to be stored away, and Fig. 4 is a detail plan portion partly broken away and partly in section.

In the drawings, A represents the sup porting-legs, of which there are two pairs spaced apart when in use, the members of each pair being pivoted together intermediate their ends, as shown at A, and above the pivotal point the legs A are notched, as shown at A and when in use clothes-lines A are stretched from one pair of supporting-legs vto the other, the notches A forming a convenient construction of holding the lines against slipping downwardly when tied to the legs A.

Bars B are hinged, as shown at B to one member of each pair of legs A adjacent the pivotal point A, and a hook B, carried by the said leg, is adapted to engage a suitable eye carried by the bar and serves to brace the same, this construction being duplicated at each end of the rack.

A central coupling C is provided, which is formed in two sections hinged together, and the bars B are adapted to telescope or slide into the coupling 0 from each end. In the simple form shown by me the coupling is and these perforations aline with those of the coupling or block and pins E secure the bars in place. The sectional block or coupling is hinged at D, and one section carries a hook D and the other section an eye D adapted to be engaged by the hook when the parts are unfolded and extended for use.

In use the legs A are extended, as shown in Fig. 1, movement of the lowerends of each pair away from each other being limited by a cord F, and the pairs are spaced apart by means of the bars B and coupling C, which also serve to hold the structure in an upright position. The sliding movement of the bars B within the coupling C allows for adjusting izhe (Rstance between the pairs of supportingegs When partly folded, .the parts'will assume the position shown in Fig. 2, and when entirely folded the two sections of the coupling C will contact along two faces, or the bars B can be entirely withdrawn from the sections of the coupling C and the rack folded upon itself and the coupling-sections folded upon themselves and then placed centrally in the position shown in Fig. 3, thus compactly packing the various parts, distributing the weight of the device more evenly for cartage purposes.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. A device of the kind described comprising supporting-legs, bars hinged thereto, a coupling adapted to receive the free ends of thebars, and means for detachably securing the bars in engagement with the coupling.

2. A device of the kind described comprising supporting-legs pivoted together intermediate their ends, bars hinged to the legs adjacent the pivotal point, a coupling comprising sections hinged together and adapted to receive the ends of the bars, means for locking the bars in engagement with the coupling, and a cord connecting the lower the bars in the slotted portions of the blocks, end oillsalid legs. k d as and for the purpose set forth.
