Be it known that SAMUEL MANNiNo, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of the city and county of Albany, State of Nemi York, have inventedcertain new and useful improvements in Apparatus for hixing Fluids, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to apparatus for mixing fluids; and the object of my invention is to provide a mixing-receptacle by means of which the hot and cold Water to be used, especially for bathing purposes, may be mixed, so that the proportion of Water from thc hotwater intake to that of the cold Water from the cold-Water intake will be accurately determined and when regulated will remain the same until changed bythe operator, and such other elements and combinations as are hereinafter more particularly set forth and claimed. I accomplish this object by means of the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which" Figure l is a front elevation Wit-h parts broken away. It is understood, of course, that the cap K and the dial N are placed in position before the handle G and the pointer l are secured to the hub. On the dial I'preferably place the letters Olf,"7 which in Fig. l are at the top of the dial and indicate when the pointer J points toward theni that no Water is admitted into the plug B, the letters C C on each side of the word Ulf indicating when the pointer points toward either of them that cold Water is delivered to the plug B, the letters M l M indicating when the pointer points to them that water of medium temperature is delivered `to the plug, and the letters ,ll ll will indicate when the pointer points toward either of them that hot Water is admitted to the cylinder.
As thus arranged when the plug B is in thev position shown in Fig, 3, the openings l) D therein out of register with each oi' the intakes l and 2, no water is admitted to the plug7 and the pointer in this )osition will be toward the letters Oli. Should the plugbe rotated toward the left, the pointer would then move to the osition indicated by the letter t on the dlal, the openi'ngl' would register with thi` cold-water opening l, and the cold 'atei' would be discharged through the opening E and the shower-port 3. if th(` plug is rotated from the position shown in Fig. 1 to the right, to the point indicated by C, the cold water would be admitted to tho plug, and the port E of the plug would register with the port 4, and cold water would be discharged through the hand-spray. I preferably arrange upon the dial the projecting lugs P'P, which are' stops projecting lin the path of the movement of the pointer and prevent further movement of thepointer, and therefore further rotation of the plug.
By making the openings D and D narrower at one end than at the other and graduall tapering I have arranged for admitting eitier a small or a large stream of water and gradually increasing or diminishing the volume when desired by rotating the plug, and it is for this reason that l say that in any position between and H both hot and cold water will be admitted, the degree depending upon whether the wide or the narrower portion of the openings D and 1)/ registers with the intakes.
in practice I preferably arrange my device so that the cold water will be admitted through the full opening and later on the hot water through the contracted opening and gradually increase the latter and decrease the former simultaneously and at the same time adrnittingto the shower or to the handspray, according to the direction of rotation.

take for cold water, and two outlet-ports; a plug in said casting provided with a port adapted to register with either outlet-ports, which one dependingupon the direction the plug is rotated, and also provided with two tapering openings, havinrr the smaller ends of 'g y said openings toward .each other g a space between the smaller ends of said openings; a space between the ends et .the enlarged portions of said tapering openings, whereby the distance remaining between the ends of the tapering openings will' allowl for the side of the plug between the openings to not only act as a closure for the hot-water intake when the plug is in a single position, but to maintain said hot-water intake closed duringla portion of the time ther plug is rotated 1n either direction, the space between the ends of the enlarged portions of s aid tapering openlngs suiiiciently great to act as a closure for the cold-water port, but which will revister with said cold-water port when the ug is rotated in either direction before the otwater port will bev opened; the continued movement of the plug in the direction in which it is rotated causing a decrease in the flowof cold water and permitting the-inflow of hot water, dependent upon the extent to which the plug is rotated, until the cold-water intake is 'closed by the side of the plug bei tween the narrower portions of the said tapering openings, registering with the cold-water port.
