Be it known that I, J osErH WILLIAM GRAY, l a citizen of the-United States, and a resident of Evenwood, in the county of Randolph and State of West Virginia, have invented a new and Improved Safety-Trip, of which the Jfollowing is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention relates to logging trucks and cars having removable stakes at the sides for holding the logs in position on the. truck or car. v
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved safety-trip for holdingthe stake-chain and the stakes inactive position while the truck or car is loaded and en route and to permit the operator to safely release the stake-chain and stakes whenever it is desired to unload.
The invention consists of novel features and parts and `combinations of the same, which will be more fully described hereinafter and then pointed out in the claims.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings,
forming a part of this speciiication, in which p similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is an end elevation of a portion of a logging-car provided with the improvement. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a transverse section of the seat for the stake, the latter being shown in elevation.4 Fig. 4 is a sectional side elevation of the improvement on the line 4 4 of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is an enlarged sectional side elevation of the improvement on the line 5 5 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 6 is a side elevation of the holding and releasing arm for the stake-chain hook.
The loggin truck or car A is provided at each side wit the usual seats A for the reception of the Shanks B of the stakes B, employed :Eorholding the logs in position on the truck or car. Each stake B is provided on its outer base with a projection B2, on which end link C on a bolt E and having its other end link C2 arranged for engagement with a hook or iinger F, mounted toswing on the bolt E as a fulcrum. The iree end of the hook or finger F is adapted to be engaged b the eye G of a holding or releasing arm ulcrumed on, a bolt H and pivotally connected at its free end with a rod l, extending transversely and provided with an eye l', adapted to engage a catch J for holdinthe rod l in active position, as indicated 1n gs. l
1 and 2. The catch J is provided with a locking-handle J for holding thel eye l against accidental displacement on' the catch J, as will vbe readily understood by reference to Figs.` 1 and 5. 'The bolts E andH are held in the cross-beam oi the'truck or car A, carrying 'the' corresponding stake B, and the bolts E and Hare connected with each other by suitable braces K to strengthen the-construction of the device. They catch J is also held in the transverse beam'of the truck or car holding the stake B, and when the lockinghandle J of the said catch is swung into a horizontal position," as indicated in` dotted lines in Fig. 5, then the eye l can be readily removed from the catch J or placed in position thereon. Now when the several parts are in the position illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2 then the stake-chain C engages and holds the stake B in position, and the said stakechain is locked in place by the hook or finger F, which in turn is'locked in position by the holding and releasing arm G, held against movement by the lock-rod l.
Now when it is desired to unload the car it is only necessary for the operator standing on the side of the car opposite the one on which the unloading is to be done to irst swing the handle J in a horizontal position, then disen- O'a e the eye I from the catch J and pull the rod l inward toward himself to swing the holding and releasing arm Cr out of engagement with the hook or finger F. Now the ressure exerted by the logs against the inner face of the stake B causes the latter to swing outward and downward, (see dottedlines in Fig. 1,) and in doing so the said stake B pulls on the chain C and draws the link C2 thereof out of engagement with the released hook or n er F. Thus the stake-chain C is released an the stake B is free to fall, so that the logs can be readily discharged. over the side of the logging truck or car.
From the Jforegoing it will be seen that by the arrangement described the operator is not at any time in danger of being struck by the logs when releasing the stakes, and the device permits of securely holding the stakes in position, and enables the operator to.
readily release the same, as above explained. Having thus described my invention, l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent# 1. A safety-trip for lo ging trucks and cars, provided with a swin ook for engagement with one end oi the sta e-chain, and a holding Iroo and releasing arm mounted to swing and adapted to engage the said swinghook.

A safety-trip for log ing trucks and oars, comprising e stake, a ste e-ehain fastened at one end and adapted to engage the said stake, a swing-hook ada ted to engage the other end of the said sta e-ohain, and a nianuallycontrolled holding and releasing device mounted to swing and having en eye for engaging the swidsWing-hook.
