Description

ooooooooooo ,ooocooooooo O ooooaoooooo @taient l @tilt messed@ BENJAMIN Nor rr, or ALBANY, NEW YORK.
Letters Patent No. 85,877, dated November 10,1868.
ILLUMINATOR I'R STOVES, GRATES, 84C.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
Be it'A known that I, BENJAMIN Norr, of Albany, in the county of Albany, and State of New York, have invented a newv and useful .improvement in Illuminators or Transparents for Stoves, Grates, Ranges, Furnaces, Sto.; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being' had to the accompanying drawings, which makr part of this specification, and in which- Figure l represents a view in perspective of my improved illuminator;
Figure 2, a horizontal section of thc same;
Figure 3, a view in elevation, and on a smaller scale,
of the slide D; and p Figure 49a vienT in perspective of my improved illuminator as placed in position upon a stove.
The obj ect of my invention is to produce an illuminator or translucent to be attached to the door of a stove, grate,` range, or heater, for the purposeof diifusing the light ofthe fire through the room, and which shall be so arranged as to obviate risk of having the glass broken by sudden changes of temperature, or soiled and blackened by smoke in kindling the fire; to which ends my improvement consists -in hinging to the door of a stove or heater, or -to the stove itself, so as to be used as a door, a metallic frame or case, closed at the front by a glass plate, behind which are arranged glass cylinders,
and open to the lire at its rear, which can be closed at pleasure by doors or dempers, either perforated or tight.
In the accompanying drawings, which show a convenient arrangement of parts for carrying out the objects of my invention, A represents the metallic frame or case, which, in this case, is hinged to the stovedoor B, the latter being provided with an opening, H, of similar shape and size to the rear side of the case A, and before which the case is hung. The case .may be attached directly to the stove, so as to act as a door, if desired. A vertical glass plate or slide, E, is placed in the case A, a short distance from the front, which is open. This plate prevents heat or smoke escaping into the wroom, butlof course allows the light to pass, and, being very near the front of the case, is not exposed to excessive heat. Hollow cylinders of glass, F, are arranged side by side, and in a vertical position, in rear of the plate E. These cylinders serve to redect the light, and diffuse it with a pleasant effect onl the room. Currents of air pass through the cylinders F by means of holes in the bottom of the case beneath them, `and perforations in the hinged top, G, of the oase,
Communication may be shut off from the case to the stove, when desired, either -by the slide D or doors C C. The door Gis shown as perforated, and is operated by the handle a, the door Gbeing plain, and operated by a similar handle. By means of the slide or doors, the cylinders F and plate E can be protected from excessive heat when necessary, andalso from the smoke which is evolved in kindling aiire. The cracked and discolored appearance which they mica ordinarily used in stovedoors presents, distigures them, and materially impairs translucent eifect, and is due to the lack of protection from the heat and smoke.
My invention is applicable to any form of stove or heater, and can be attached either to the door, as hereinbefore described, or to the stove itself in the manner of a door, and the cylinders and slides can be readily removed and replaced, when desired, for pur? poses of cleaning or repair. Colored glass can be used, if desired.
Having thus fully described my invention,
VVhat I claim therein as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The within-described illminator, hinged to a stove or other heater in the manner and answering the purpose of a door, as set forth.
2. The hollow glass cylinders F, having-currents ofair circulating through them, substantially as and for the purpose as set forth.
3. Using glass cylinders to transmit the light Afrom a stove or heater, whenprotected by adjustable doors or dampers in rear thereof, as set forth.
4. The `cylinders F, in combination with the plates D and E, or reither of them, substantially as and yfor the purpose set forth'.
5. The cylinders F, in combination With the doors C and G', or either of them, substantially as set forth.
6. The combination of the cylinders F, plates D and E, or. either of them, with the doors G- and C', or either of them, substantially as set forth.
7. The combination of the 'cylinders F, plates D and E, or either of them, doors (l and C', or either of them, with a stove, or door of a stove, substantially as set forth.
