Description
No. 838,481. PATENTED DEC. 11-, 1906.
' H. WALLER. v
WIRE STRBTOHER.
APPLICATION FILED MAY 21, 195B.
HENRY WALLER, OF BINSOARTH, MANITOBA, CANADA.
WlRE-STRETCHER.
Specification of Letters-Patent.
Patented Dec. 11, 1906,
Application filed May 21, 1906. Serial N0= 317,988.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY WALLER, a sub j ect of the King of Great Britain, residing at Binscarth, in the Province of Manitoba and Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in fire- Stretchers; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in wirestretchers.
The object of the invention is to provide an improved construction of wire-stretcher by means of which a wire may bes tretched without twisting the post on which the stretcher is fulcrumed and which may be easily operated by one person to stretch and fasten a wire.
A further object is to provide a stretcher of this character which will be simple, strong, durable, and inexpensive in construction, efficient in operation, and well adapted to the use for which it is designed.
l/Vith the foregoing and other objects in view the invention consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a wire-stretcher constructed in accordance with the invention, and Fig. 2 is a plan view showing the manner of operating the same.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 denotes the stretcher, which consists of an operating lever or handle 2, to one side of the outer end of which is secured, preferably by bolts 3, a curved or segmental fulcrum-bar 4, said fulcrum-bar having integrally formed or otherwise connected to its outer end a brace-bar 5, the opposite end of which is secured to the lever or handle 2, preferably by a bolt 6, thereby securely holding and bracing said fulcrum-bar on said lever. If desired, the lever may be provided on its side opposite the fulcrum-bar and brace with a washerplate 6', through which the bolts 3 and 6 are passed and by means 'of whichthe nuts on said bolts are prevented from wearing holes in the lever.
Loosely engaging the lever or handle 2 above the connection of the brace 5 is a link 7, said link being held in place by a staple 8.
I Attached to the link 7 by a series of links or other flexible connection 9 is a grab-hook 10 to engage the wire to be stretched, said hook being provided with a V-shaped notch 12, by means of which the same is enabled to take a firm grip on the wire and by means of which the harder the pull the tighter the grip will become.
In using the stretcher the fulcrum-bar 4 is engaged with the post to which the wire is to be secured, and the hook 10 is engaged with said wire. The lever is now forced around the post, which will cause the hook 10 to draw upon and stretch the wire. When the wire has been sufficiently stretched, the same may be secured to the post by-a staple or other fastening while being held by the operator, thus enabling one person to stretch and fasten a wire, the arrangement and shape of the fulcrum bar being such as to prevent the twisting of thepost while the wire is being stretched.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the inven tion will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to Without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention as defined by the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The herein-described wire-stretcher comprising a lever, a fulcrum-bar on one side and at one end thereof and comprising a laterallyinclined portion and an incurved portion bent therefrom to provide a concave recess to receive a post, the ends of said fulcrum-bar being secured to said lever, a link connected to the lever, a chain attached to said link, and a wire-engaging hook attached to said chain and having a V-shaped grippingnotch, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
HENRY WALLER. Witnesses:
JOHN HENRY ADGOGK, N. SrnNcE.
