To all'whom it may concern.-
'Beitknown that 1, DAVID E. ROWLAND, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Canton,in the countyof Stark and State of Ohio,
have invented certain new and useful Improvements in renches, and I do hereby declare the-following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable othersskilled in the artto which it'appertains to make and use the same, referencebeing had'to the accompanying drawings, and to'the' numerals of reference-marked thereon, which form'a part of this specification.
My invention relates to that class of wrenches in which the movable aw is operated or adjusted by the rotation of the handle.

In the accompanying drawings, 1 represents the shank, which is formed hollow throughout its entirelength and is provided with'the integral jaw 2, which is of ordinary construction. The shank is also provided with the pivoted pipe-grip jaw 3, which pipegrip jaw is of ordinary constructionand has no particular reference to the present inven- *tion.
\Vithin the hollow shank 1 is nor mally located the stem 4, which stem is provided with the jaw 5 and may be provided with the notched or pipe-grip jaw 6 and should be so provided, providing it isdesirable to construct a combined nut and pipe wrench. The stem 4 is formed hollow throughout its entire length, and a portion of said shank is provided with internal screwthreads, which internal screw-threads arefor the purpose of receiving the screw-threads upon the'handle-stem 7, said screw-threads being forthe purpose of providing adjustment as between the'jaw on the shank land the aws upon the stem 4.
The shank 1 is provided'with the shoulders 8, which shoulders are for the urpose of forming seats for the non-rotatab e collar or disk 9, which disk is provided upon one of'its sides or faces with the plain-facededges '10, whichplain-faced edges are seated adjacent the plain-faced edges 11, formed upon the shank 1, as best illustrated in Fig. 5, said plainfaced edges 10 and 1 1 being for the purpose of holding the disk 9 against rotation during the time the wrench-j aws are adjusted to and from each other or during the time the handle-stem is rotated. The handle-stem 7 is provided with the flange 12, which flange is located between the collar or disk 9 and the shank-collar handle is held by means of the screw-threaded nut 15, located upon the screw-threaded part of the tapered handle portion. The handle-stem 7 is provided with the lugs 16,
which lugs are seated in the notches 17,
formed in the web 18 of the ferrule 19. The ferrule 19 is located upon the handle 14,-as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2, and for the purpose of causing the ferrule to rotate with'the rotation of the handle 14 and in turn causing the handle-ste1n 7 to rotate with the handle the webs or flanges 20 are formed upon=the web 18, which flanges are seated in the handle, and the lugs 16 seated in the notches 17.
For the purpose of providing a means for rotating the shank-collar 13 it is provided with the angled flange portion 21, upon which a wrench can be applied.
It will be understood that when the handle and held in fixed relationship therewith by r 14 is rotated it will also rotate the handlev means for imparting rotary motion to the stem 7, which rotation will impart a longitudinal movement to the stem 4,. By locating the flange 12 between the disk 9 and the collar 13 and spacing said parts from each other a distance equal to the thickness of the flange 12, or substantially so, there can be no end movement of the handle-stem 7 independent of the non-adjustable parts of the wrench, thereby holding the handle-stem during the time of its rotation. The non-screw-threaded portion of the stem 4 is formed somewhat larger in diameter than the extreme diameter of the handle-stem 7 and is so formed for the purpose of providing a space between the outer edges of the screw-threads, by which arrangement there is lessliability of any binding as between the stem 4 and the handle-- stem 7. It is well understood that in use heavy strain is frequently brought upon the wrench, which in some instances may have a tendency to slightly spring the handle-stem, which would cause the handle-stem to bind to a greater or less extent if the screw-threads were extended throughout the entire length of the stem 4. To facilitate in properly molding the stem 4, it is formed hollow throughout its entire length and must be so molded to carry out the advantages derived from the open ends of the shank. It will be understood that by providing the collar 9 and locating the same as described the flange 12 will be seated against the face of said collar, thereby providing a perfect seat for said flange to rotate against. By providingthe collar 9 and detachably connecting the same to the shank 1 I am enabled to easily remove said collar for any purpose,
, such as cleaning the inner surface of the shank 1 or for any other purpose.
Having fully described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a wrench of the class described, the combination of a hollow shank provided with a fixed jaw, a hollow stem rovided with a jaw, said hollow stem provi ed with internal screw-threads, a screw-threaded handle-stem,
and a handle. mounted thereon, the shank provided with a flange, collars spaced from each other and carried by the'hollow shank, lugs formed upon the handle-stem, a handleferrule provided with a web, said web provided with notches and the lugs formed upon the handle-stem adapted to be seated in the notches of the ferrule-web, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. In a wrench of the class described, a shank, and a stem located therein, said shank and stem provided with jaws, means for imarting longitudinal movement to the stem ocated in the shank, a handle-stem provided with a flange, collars located upon the opposite sides of the flange and a handle-stem and handle-stem, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
3. In a wrench of the class described, the combination of a shank and a stem each provided with a jaw, a handle-stem normally located in the stem provided with a jaw, a handle mounted upon the handle-stem, and a ferrule provided with a notched web, lugs formed upon the handle-stem and adapted to be seated in the notched web, a flange located upon the handle-stem, collars carried by the shank, and spaced from each other and the flange of the handle-stem located between the collars, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
4. In a wrench of the class described the combination of an open-ended hollow shank and a hollow stem each provided with a jaw, a screw-threaded handle-stem partially lo-. cated in said hollow stem, a portion of said hollow stem provided with screw-threads, adapted to receive the screw-threads of the handle-stem, and a portion of said hollow stem formed n0n-screwthreaded, said nonscrew-threaded portion having a diameter greater than the diameter of the handle-stem located within said hollow stem, a handle lo cated upon the handle-stem, means for rotating the handle-stem by the rotation of the handle and means for holding said handlestem against longitudinal movement with reference to the shank when rotated, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
5. In a wrench of the class described, the combination of a shank, a stemv slidably mounted therein, a handle-stem, and a handle mounted thereon, and rotatable therewith, said handle-stem rovided with a flange, collars carried by t e shank, and the handle-stem held against the longitudinal movement by the.collars, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
6. In a wrench of the class combination of a shank, and a stem slidably mounted therein, said stem provided with a detachable collar and a fixed collar, said collars spaced from each other, a handle-stem provided with screw-threads and the slidable stem provided with screw-threads corresponding with the screw-threads upon thev handle-stem and a flange locatedbetween the detachable collar and fixed collar carried by the shank, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
7. In a wrench of the class described, the combination of a hollow shank and a hollow stem each provided with a jaw, the hollow stem slidably mounted in the shank and formed hollow throughout its entire length, said hollow stem provided with internal screw-threads for a portion of its length and a non-screw-threaded portion formed of a diameter greater than the diameter of the described the i IIU ' stem against longitudinal movement Withl Witnesses:
