Description

No. 836,459. PATENTED NOV. 20, 1906. E. A. PETERSON. LIGHTER BAR FRAME FOR RAG ENGINES.
APPLICATION FILED AUG. 15, 1906.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EMIL A. PETERSON, OF APPLETON, WISCONSIN, ASSIGNOR TO VALLEY IRON WORKS 00., OF APPLETON, WISCONSIN, A CORPORATION OF WISCONSIN.
Specification of Letters Patent.
I Patented Nov. 20, 1906.
Application filed August 15,1906. Serial No, 330,689.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that LEMIL A. PETERSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Appleton, county of Outagamie, and State of Wisconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Lighter-Bar Frames for Rag Engines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in lighter-bar frames for ragengines, and pertains especially to the reinforcing or'bracing connections between the lighter-bar posts.
Owing to the excessive strains and vibra tions in machines of the described class, breakage is frequent, especially in the braces for the lighter-bar posts. It is desirable that these posts and the braces therefor should be made of cast metal, and it has heretofore been thought necessary to cast the frame integrally to prevent the parts from loosening when subject to the vibrations of the engine in operation. This, however, made it necessary to discard the entire frame in case any part became broken; and the object of my invention is to provide a form of frame which can be made of separable members which will not loosen or separate when the engine is in operation.
In the following description reference is had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side view of a rag-engine embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a view of one of the posts as seen from its inner face. Fig. 3 is a detail cross-sectional View of one of the posts drawn on line as at of Fig. 1.
Like parts are identified by the same reference characters throughout the several views.
1 and 2 are lighter-bar posts from which the shaft 3 of the engine may be supported by the lighter-bar 4 in any ordinary manner. These posts are cast hollow and provided with slots 5 to receive the ends of the lighter bar, and the lower ends of these slots are provided with end extensions 6, preferably of reduced width, as shown. A web 7 occupies the space under the lighter-bar and between the posts, this web being provided with flanges 9, adapted to be secured to the bedplate 10 by bolts 11 and flanges 12, adapted to be secured to therespective posts by bolts 13. The web is also provided near its upper corners with interlocking members, each comprising a neck 15, adapted to fit the eX- tension 6 in the corresponding post-slot, and a head 16, which projects within the hollow interior of the post. Wedges 17 are inserted between these heads 16 and the walls of the posts adjacent to the slots, whereby the frames are bound rigidly to the posts. The webs 7 are adjusted into position from the tops of the posts when the lighter-bar is removed. In case of breakage the lighter-bar is first lifted from the posts and the wedges 17 removed. The web being unbolted, it can then be lifted and removed from the posts.
It will be observed that the posts are provided with base-flanges 19, secured to the bedplate by bolts 20. Each post can therefore be also independently separated and removed, if desired.-
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a machine of the described class, the combination with a bed-plate of a set of hollow lighter-bar posts, each provided with a substantially vertical slot in its inner face; a web connecting said posts, and provided with headed interlocking members extending through said slots; wedges engaging between the post-walls along the slots, and the heads of said members; and bolts connecting the web with the posts and bed-plate respectively.
2. In a machine of the described class, the combination with a bed-plate; of a set of hollow lighter-bar posts, each provided with a substantially vertical slot in its inner face; a web connecting said posts, and having interlocking engagement with the posts through said slots; said web being provided with flanges adapted to be bolted to the posts and bed-plate respectively.
3. In a machine of the described class, the combination with a bed-plate; of a set of hollow lighter-bar posts, each provided with a substantially vertical slot in its inner face;
a web connecting said posts, and having in- I In testimony whereof I afiix my signature terlocking engagemelnt gith the posts tlrouglfi I in the presence of two Witnesses. said slots; said We ein rovide Wit flanges adapted to be boltec? t5 the posts and i EMIL PETERSON 5 bed-plate respectively, and said posts hav- Witnesses:
