APPLIUATION FILED AUG.15, 1904.

(lUSTAVE L. HERZ. OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 6, 1906.
Application filed August 15, 1904. Serial No. 220,769.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GUsTAvn L. lines, a subject of the Em eror of Austriadl'ungary, and a resident of t 16 borough of Manhattan, in the city and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Terminal Tips for Electric ConductinglViros, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a terminal tip for wires--such, for instance, as electric oonduotin '-wires--which will he ex tremely strong ant durable and which is particular y applicable 1" or use in connection with the wiring of explosive hydroearhon engines wh ere the terminal tips are subjected to great strain.
A further object is to provide a terminal tip of improved construction in which a spool is provided around which the bare wire may be wound, and a shank is provided with wings for clamping the insulated covering of the wire to the tip toprevent the stripping of the covering from the wire.
.In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a portion of an electric conduct lug-wire and the terminal tip to which it is securedin top plan. Fig. .2 is a bottom plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a side view. Fig. 4 is a )lan. view of the blank from which is forms one end of the spool, the shank, and the wings. Fig. 5 is a front view of the plate which forms the other end of the spool. 6 is a side view of the same. Fig. 7 is a longitudinal vertical section through the terminal tip, and Fi 8 is a lorwitudinal vertical sec tion throng i a modified form of terminal tip.
The electric conducting-wire herein represented is shown as composed of a core 1*, made up of a plurality of strands twisted togather and an insulated coverirTgZ therefor. The terminal ti oom rises a spool around which the core 1 of t 0 wire lswound, a shank projecting from one of the end plates of the spool, and wings extended laterally from the shank. In the present instance'the back end plate 1 of the spool is provided with a shank 2, which shank has extended therefrom lateral wings 3 and 4. A hole 5 formed in the shank 2. end plate 1 is provided with a central hol 6 therethrough, .he front end plate is dented by 7, which end plate is provided wi i a countersunk portion 8 and a central flaii ge 9, forming the wall of a central hole 1.0 therethrough. The
end plate 7 is secured to the end )late l by inserting the llange 9 through the role (5 and then upsetting the flange against the liar-k of the end plate 1. The countersunk portion u of the end plate 7 serves to space the end plates of the spool a sufl'ioient distance apart to )ermit the core 1* of the (701l(ll1(tl1l,L--l1'ti to .e wound around the spool between the said end plates in the ta cred groove formed thereby. This tapers groove serves to cause the end plates to snugly gri the wire. To errnit this to be done, the insu ated coverin 3* is stripped away from the core 1* of the wire the required distance. he end of the core 1* is passed through the hole 5 in. the shank 2 andbent into engagement with the back of the shank. The wins 3 and 4 are then wrapped around the insu ated covering 2 of the wire for securin it to the shank and also to prevent the iurt er stri PlX'lg'Of the covering from. the core. T 1e hole through the s 001 permits the passage therethrough of a hiding-screw (not shown here in) for the purpose of securing the terminal tip to any required support.
In the form shown in Fig. 8 the front plate of the s 001 is formed by drawing the material of t is back plateinto the desired shape, thus obviating the necessity of riveting the front plate to the hack plate, as in the other form shownl What I claim as my invention is* 1. A sheet-metal terminal tip for wires comprising two end plates riveted together to form a spool around which the wire n'iay he wound, and a shank formed integral with one of the end plates, to which the wire may be secured the said shank having a hole therein throu ;h which the end of the wire may be passer to more securely look the wire in position.
A sheet-metal terminal tip for wires comprising two end plates riveted together to form a spool around which the wire may he wound, a shapk formed integral with one of the end dates and wings projecting laterally from t e shank arranged to he Wrapped around the wire for securing it to the shank the said shank having a hole therein through which. the end of the wire may he passed to more securely look the wire in'position.
3. A sheet-metal terminal tip for wires comprising a Hat end plate, a dish-shaped end plate riveted thereto to form a spool around which the wire may be wound, and a shank formed integral with one of the end ence of two witnesses, this 11th day of Auplagesilto 1whlich the wire mayhbe secuied thle L gust, 1904. sa'u s an mvin a hole t erein t noug 1 L 1 w r which the end of he wire may be passed to 1 HERA more securely lock the wire in position. Witnesses:
