To all whom it may concern,.-
Beit known that I, LAVALETTE L. LOGAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Johnstown, in the county ofy Cambria and State of Pennsylvania, have invented newv and useful Improvements in a Fluid-Operated Actuati-ng Device, of which the following is a specification:
This invention -relates to a fluid-operated actuating device capable of various uses. I
have found it of particular advantage in con-- nection with a mine-door. In this particular use the object of the device-is toopen the mine-door against a given pressure with as little water as possible.
The mine-door is hard to vstart to open; but after it has been partially opened the pressure against it is very much lessened. By virtue of my fluidoperated actuating device I am enabled to apply to the door initially sufficient power to readily start it open, the power thereafter expended in fully opening the door being relatively low. I amenabled to accomplish the results in question with a minimum amount of water, thereby securing economy. l I have set forth one advantageous use to which the device may be put. There are others, as will be understood from my opening statement, I have also indicated that economy of water is assured. It will be understood that this is the case when water is employed as the fluid agent for effecting the operation of the device.
Where other iiuid, such as air or steam, is employed, e ual economy follows their use.
In thel rawings accompanying and forming a part of this specification I illustrate a simple form of embodiment of the invention, which,to enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, I will set forth in detail in the following description, while the novelty of the invention will be included in the claims succeeding said description.
In said drawings, Figure l is a plan view, and Fig. 2 a longitudinal sectional elevation, of a fluid-operated actuating device involving my invention.

The 'device vis shown as including in its make-up a base-plateas 2, illustrated as fastened to thel foundation-piece 3, which ma be a plank, bolts being provided for the purpose. From one end of the foundation-plate is shown as rising a circular flange 4, which, as will hereinafter appear, constitutes a stop for limiting themotion of a plunger or piston,
parts throughas 5. This plunger or `piston 5 is represented as mounted for reciprocation in a barrel o r cylinder, as 6. I use the several terms hereinbefore mentioned in their broad senses, and the same applies to those hereinafter used. For example, while I term the part 6 a barrel or cylinder, it is evidentthat the same need not be circular in cross-section. One end, or what is shown as the left end in Fig. 2 of the barrel or cylinder 6, is fitted into an annular flange extending laterally from the marginal portion of the flange 4, a screwthread union between the two constituting'arsimple means of detachably uniting them. The flange 4 really presents a head for one endof the barrel or cylinder 6, the opposite end of the latter. being represented as closed by a head or Lcap 7, which can be detachably fitted in place by a screw-thread joint, asindicated in Fig. 1. The piston 5 is shown as' being at the limit of its backward stroke in flange or stop 4. The stroke of the-piston 5, which latter might be considered a main pist0n, is -reduced with respect to a second or auxiliary piston hereinafter described. Their effective areas are also different, the efectife area of lthe main piston being greater than that of the auxiliary one.
' The barrel or cylinder 6 might be considered as a main one, an auxiliary barrel of less diameter than the main one being shown at 8. The two barrels in Vthe present instance are concentric. The barrel 8 extends through a central perforation in the flange 4 and also through a registering perforation inthe flange 9, located at the end of the plate 2 opposite that provided with the flange 4. The walls barrel 8 in its longitudinal reciprocative movements. The inner end of the auxiliary barrel is shown as extended through and in piston 5. I have shown as threaded onto the extreme inner end of the auxiliary 4barrel 8 a cap or nut 10, -a packing-ring and a washer being interposed between the piston and cap. v By tightening up the cap or nut 10 the packtween the same and the piston, so as to provided for an absolutely water-tight fit of the piston 5 in its barrel 6. The cap-10 therefore closes the open end of the cylinder 8 and really presents a head therefor, and it is erforated for the entrance of an operating fIuid linto the auxiliary barrel.

The piston 12 is packed substantially like the piston 5 and for the same purpose.
To supply an agent to the two cylinders for operating the same, I have represented apipe, as 14, tapped into the head or cap 7. The iiuid therefore can enter the cylinder 6 to o perate its piston 5, the latter as it advances advancing the barrel 8. Subsequently the piston 12 will be operated so as to move it longitudinally of its cylinder or until it strikes the marginal iiange of the ring, as. 15, threaded onto the outer end of the barrel 8, which ring constitutes a stop for limiting the advancing stroke of the piston 12. It will be apparent, of course, that the stroke of the piston 12 is greater than that of the piston 5.
I may employ the device in connection with a mine-door such as that disclosed in my contemporaneously-pending application for patent, iiled December 15, 1904, Serial No. 237,043. In the mine-door of the application there is connected operatively thereto a piston-rod, and in practice I would connect arod, such as 13, to such a door.
It is believed the operation of the apparatus will be understood from what is hereinbefore stated. Upon the admission of water into the cylinder 6 the piston 5 is iirst operated to apply to the door a relatively powerful force to start it open. When the piston 5 has done its work, it will strike the stop 4, the door at this time having been opened sufliciently to relieve it from air-pressure. The door, however, is not wide open. As the piston 5 moves it carries therewith the cylinder 8. After the initial opening movement of the door the piston 12 becomes eifective for opening the door to the necessary extent, such piston being driven forward and away from the cap or head 10 by water entering its cylinder 8 by way of the perforations in the head or cap 10.
What I claim is- 1. The combination of a main cylinder, a piston in the said cylinder, an auxiliary cylinder extending entirely through the said piston and through one head of the main cylinder, the other head of said main cylinder having a supply-port, a cap fitted to the inner end of the auxiliary cylinder, constituting a head therefor and having a supply-port for said auxiliary cylinder, and a piston in the auxiliary cylinder.

piston in said cylinder, an auxiliary cylinder extending entirely through the piston and through one head of the main cylinder, the other head of said main cylinder having a supply-port, a cap threaded onto the inner end of the auxiliary cylinder, a packing between said piston and the cap, held in place by the latter and adapted to traverse the inner surface of the main cylinder, and a piston in the auxiliary cylinder, said cap having a port to permit a iiuid to be supplied to the auxiliary cylinder.
3. The combination of a main cylinder, a piston in said cylinder, an auxiliary cylinder extending entirely through the piston and through one head of the main cylinder, the other head of said main cylinder having a supply-port, a cap threaded onto the inner end of the auxiliary cylinder, a packing between said piston and the cap, held in place by the latter and adapted to traverse the inner surface of the main cylinder, a piston in the auxiliary cylinder, said cap having a port to permit a iiuid to be supplied to the auxiliary cylinder, a rod jointed to the last-mentioned piston, .and a' flange having a perforation through which the auxiliary cylinder passes.
4. The combination of a main cylinder, a piston in said cylinder, an auxiliary cylinder extending entirely through the piston and through one head of the main cylinder, the other head of said main cylinder being detachably mounted and having a supply-port, a cap threaded onto the inner end of the auxiliary cylinder, a packing between said piston and said cap, held in place by said cap, surrounding one end of the auxiliary cylinder and adapted to traverse the inner surface of the main cylinder, and a piston in the auxiliary cylinder, the cap having a port to permit a Huid to be supplied to the auxiliary cylinder.
5. The combinaton of a main cylinder, a piston in said cylinder, an auxiliary cylinder extending entirely through the piston and through one head of the main cylinder, the other head of said main cylinder being detachably mounted and having a supply-port, a cap threaded onto the inner end of the auxiliary cylinder, a packing between said piston and said cap, held in place by said cap, surrounding one end of the auxiliary cylinder and adapted to traverse the inner surface of the main cylinder, a piston in the auxiliary cylinder, the cap having a port to permit a iiuid to be supplied to the auxiliary cylinder, and a rod jointed to said last-mentioned piston.
