Be it known that l, JULrUs KozoRA, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings andState of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dumping-Buckets, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the artto which it appertains to make and use the same.`

This invention relates to dumping-buckets of the class-used in .hoisting dirt. and other material from excavations by means ofderricks, traveling trolleys, and similar devices and the object of the invention is to provide improved means for dumping the contents of such buckets.l l

v The invention is fullyv ydisclosed in the folpanying drawings form a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitablefreference characters in each of the views, and in which- Figure 1 is a side view of a'dumping-bucket constructed` according to my invention and showing the bottom closed; Fig. 2, a view similar to Fig. l, but showing the bottom open; Fig. 3, a view at right angles to that lshown in Fig. 1, and Fig. 4 a plan view of the bucket as shown in Fig. 1.

1n the practice of my invention l provide a bucket a, which in the form of construction shown is substantially rectangular or square in cross-section, but which may .be of any desired shape in cross-section, Q and said bucket may be composed of sheet metal or any suitable material and is preferably provided with a reinforcing top band a2 and a reinforcing bottom band c3, and in the form of construction shown the bottom portion of the bucket is contracted, as shown at a4, and slightly smaller than the top portion thereof.

Hinged to the back of the bottom portion of the bucket, as shown at a5, is a bottom b, and said bucket is provided with a suspending-yoke c, the side portions of which are ypivoted or hinged to the op osite sides of the ottom b and adjacent tot e hinge a5 of said bottom, as shown at c2.

The yoke c extends a predetermined distance above the bucket, and connected with the cross-head member c3 thereof is a link d, which is also connected with an ear d2, secured to the top front portion of the bucket opposite the hinge of the bottom b at c5, and secured to the top front portion of the bucket below the ear d2 is a spring e, which passes downwardly below the A.bottom of the bucket and is provided with a catch-head e2, which isadapted to engage the free edge of the bottom b of the bucket Aand hold it in-a closed position. y l

The bottom b of the bucket comprises a plate b2, secured to angle-iron side and back members b3, and secured to the bottom plate b2 is a forwardly and backwardly ranging` spring-plate f which projects beyond the free edge of tlie bottom b and is provided with an aperture f2, through which the head e2 of the spring-arm e passes.

which is pivoted an arm h, which ranges transversely of the body of the bucket back of the spring-arm e, and by means of which in the operationof dumping the bucket the head e2 of the spring-arm e is disconnected from Vthe free edge of the bottom l) of the bucket'and saidbottom allowed to drop, as shown in Fig. 2.

The lopposite sides of the bottom b` of th bucket .are also provided with reinforcing members b4, with which the sides ofthe yoke c are connected and which serve as means -for hinging the bottom l) at a5.

The -top portion of the yoke c is arrange transversely of the center of the bucket; but the side arms of said yoke are inclined or curved backwardly, as shown at c4, and secured to the opposite sides of the bucket, and near the back thereof are stops t, which limit the movement of the bucket in the yoke c when the contents of the bucket are dumped or the bottom 'b of said bucket lowered, as shown in Fig. 2.

The operation will be readily understood from the foregoing description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the following statement thereof. It will be understood, of course, that the hoistingcable or other device is connected with the yoke c at y' in the usual manner, and when the bucket has been iilled and hoisted and moved to the dumping point or place the springf is depressed by the attendant on the ground in order to permit the head e2 of the spring e to be released from the bottom l), and the free end of the arm h is pulled outwardly and the lower end of the spring e, or the head e2 thereof, is disconnected from the free edge of the bottom l), and the said bottom swings into the position shown in Fig. 2, and after the contents of the bucket have been dumped in IOO IIO

this manner a pull on the yoke c will automatically close the bottom b, as shown in Fig. 1. It will therefore be seen that the dumping of the bucket is produced by means of the arm h, and the bottom b is automatically closed when the bucket is again raised and transported to the point at which it is to be refilled.

It will be understood that the operation of this device de ends upon the fact that the sides of the yo ie c are pivoted to the opposite sides of the bottom b rearwardly of the vertical transverse center of the bucket or near to the hinges a5, whereby most of the load on the bottom of the bucket is between the yoke pivots or hinges c2 and the free edge of said bottom, and when said free edge of the bottom of the bucket is released, as hereinbefore described, the said bottom is forced downwardly and the various parts swing into the position shown in Fig. 2.

Having fully described my invention,what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

l. A dumping-bucket provided with a bottom which is hinged to said bucket at the back thereof, a suspending-yoke the sides of which are pivoted to the opposite sides of the bottom adjacent to the hinges thereof and the cross-head of which extends above the bucket and is connected with the front top portion thereof by a link, and means for holding the hinged bottom in a closed position.

2. A dumping-bucket provided with a bottom which is hinged to said bucket at the back thereof, a suspending-yoke the sides of which are pivoted to the opposite sides of the bottom adjacent to the hinges thereof and the cross-head of which extends above the. bucket and is connected with the front top portion thereof by a link, and means for holding the hinged bottom in a closed position, comprising a spring-arm secured to the front of the bucket and provided with a catch-head adapted to engage the free edge of the bottom when the latter is closed, and means for releasing said arm.

3. A dumping-bucket provided with a bottom which is hinged to said bucket at the back thereof, a suspending-yoke the sides of which are ivoted to the opposite sides of the bottom afjacent to the hinges thereof and the cross-head of which extends above the bucket and is connected with the front top portion thereof by a link, and means for holding the hinged bottom in a closed position, comprising a spring-arm secured to the front of the bucket and provided with a catch-head adapted to engage the free edge of the bottom when the latter is closed, and means for releasing said arm, the opposite sides of the bucket being also provided near the back thereof with stops in connection with which the sides of the suspending-yoke operate.

4. A dumping-bucket )rovided with a bot tom which is hinged thereto at the back thereof, a suspending-yoke the sides of which are pivoted to the opposite sides of the bottom adjacent to the hinges thereof, the crosshead of the yoke extending above the bucket, a link connecting the cross-head of the yoke with the front top portion of the bucket, stops connected with the opposite sides of the bucket near the back thereof, and an automatic device adapted to engage the bottom of the bucket when closed and hold it in a closed position.
