To all whom/it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CARL L. DORER, a citizen of the United States of America, and a county of Belmont, and State of Ohio ,"have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for Fire Finishing and Polishing Glassware, of-which the following'is a specification. I
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in apparatus for fire polishing and finishing glassware; andit consists in the partlcular construction, arran ement, and combination of parts, which wi l hereinafter be fully'described.
The object of the invention is to rovide a simple and efficient. machine where y articles of glassware are -automatically fire finished and polished at one operation.
A further object is to providea machine the capacity of whichfor finishing and polishing articles of glassware is not only very much. in excess of that of prevailing devices, but whichpossesses many advantages over said prevaihng devices, some of which Will hereinafter be made ap arent; and astill further object is to provld ea conveyer by means of which the articles transported from a point convenient to the presses to a point near theannealing-leers.

The ends of each of said angle-bars 16 and '17 are split, and the vertical sides thereof are turned or flared outward and the horizontal sides thereof are turned downward, thus providing guides for properly directing the baseplates as they enter upon and leave the said tracks.
The angle-bars 16 are supported upon two or more cylindrical bodies 18, which are e0- centrically mounted on shafts 19, having their ends journaled in the opposite irders 1, as shown. The verticalsides of said anglebars abut against annular shoulders or flanges 20, provided at the ends of said cylindrical bodies 18 and, as is apparent, by turning the shaft 19 the hei ht at which the holders travel in passing orward through said machine may be readily adjusted. Adjusting-nuts 21 are provided on said shafts 19, by means of which the latter may be secured in any desired position.
As driving mechanism for said machine a small motor 22 is mounted upon a suitable support, as 23, which stands upon the frame, the pinion 24 on the motor-shaft 25 meshing with a gear-wheel 26, provided upon the end of a shaft 27, which has a perpetual screw or worm 28 thereon, which acts upon the teeth of a wheel 29, fast upon a suitably-mounted transverse shaft 30, communicating a rotary motion thereto. A sprocket-wheel 3 1 is also mounted on said shaft 30, said wheel being connected by a sprocket-chain 32 with a sprocket-wheel 33, which is mounted on a transverse shaft 34, journaled in the opposite girders 1 of the frame. While I have described more or less particularlyta. gearing suitable for driving the machine, it will be understood that this is but one of a variety of methods or ways in which the machine maybe geared. Therefore it will be noted that I do not wish to limit myself to the gearing mechanism herein described, it being merely employed herein in order to show an 0 erative mechanism.
Located on the ame at a suitable oint,
referably near the'front end thereo is a urnace 38, consisting in part of side walls 39 of brick, fire-clay, or other suitable material,
mounted upon laterallyadjustable angleplates 40, located at each side of the path of travel of .the chain 7 and ware-holders 8, and of a cover or dome 41, mounted on said side walls 39. Said side walls 39 are each formed with a horizontal. or substantially horizontal ledge 42 on their inner faces,,and entering the furnace through the dome 41 directly over the horizontal ledges 42 are each adapted for directing a ame against the ledge 42. Said gas-pipes 43 lead from a large gas-pipe 44, which serves as a reservoir for containing a reserve gas-pressure, whereby a steady flow of gas to said pipes 43 is provided for. At a point above the dome 41 said gas-pipes enter air-blast pipes 45, which are connected with a large air-conductor 46. Said air-pipes entering the furnace together with the gas-pipes direct the flames from the burnin gas in the form of a blast against the faces 0 the ledges 42, from which said flame is horizontally deflected over the tops of the articles of glassware which are being carried through the furnace, reheating said articles without the flames coming into actual contact therewith. Thus the roughand uneven edges carried by the ware after leaving the molds or presses are melted down, so that the ware after passing through said furnace presents a perfectly-true smooth edge. This reheating further imparts to the ware a rare luster and brilliancy.
. Attached to the vertical portion of one of the angle-bars 16 and extending from one end of the furnace 38 to the other is the toothed rack 15, which is adapted to be enas-pipes 43,
gaged by the inion 14 of the holders 8 to rov lugs 47, which are slidable upon lateral arms 48, secured to the outer faces of the girders 1. A bolt 49, carried by each lug 47, is slidable in a slot 50, provided in the arm 48. The walls of the furnace may be adjusted relatively to each other to adapt it for the passage therethrough of articles of glassware of different sizes by the manipulation of the parts ust' described.
The general operation of the apparatusis as follows: The articles of ware immediately after being formed in the presses are placed one at a time u on the holders 8 at the front end of the mac ine. Said holders are being carried by the traveling chain 7 at a regular and uniform rate of speed. Hence while still hot from the press the said articles are carried into and through the furnace, being therein subjected to the intense heat of the fireblasts which are deflected by the ledges 42 over the tops of the articles of ware without actually coming into contact therewith. The rough edges of the ware are fused, formin a perfectly smooth and even surface or e ge upon the articles, and at the same time the ware is polished from contact with said heat. In passing through the furnace the holders bearing the ware are rotated, thus rotating the ware, so that all sides thereof are subjectedtothesame degree of heat. In apparatus of the character described, a longitudinal frame an endless-chain conveyer suitably mounted on said frame, a plu-' rality of ware-holders mounted on said conveyer, a track on which said ware-holders travel, a furnace havin a longitudinal passage way theretbroug located over said ame, means whereby a forced downwardly directed heat blast is secured in said furnace,
and means for deflecting the flame over theflops of the articles of Ware carried by said ders said means beingadapted to prevent said flame from coming into actual contact with the Ware. 7. In apparatus of the character described,

and means for preventing the flames from contacting with the ware carried through the furnace the last-mentioned means comprising a ledge on the inner face of each side wall of the furnace adapted todeflect said flames.

In apparatus of the character described, a furnace having a longitudinal passage-way therethrough, the walls of said furnace being relatively adjustable for regulatin the width of said passage-way, horizontal Iedges formed onfthe inner faces of said walls for receiving the flames of a forced vertical blast and for deflecting said flames across said passage-way, a longitudinal conveyer for carry ing articles of glassware through said passage-way, means for adjusting the height of said conveyer with respect to said furnace, and gearing for driving said conveyer.

In apparatus of the character described, a furnace having a longitudinal passage-way therethrough, the side walls of said furnace being relatively adjustable for regulating the Width of said passage-way, hori-- zontal ledges formed on the inner faces of said side walls for receiving the flames of a forced downwardly-directed blast and for deflecting said flames across said passage-way, a longitudinal frame, an endless-chain conveyer carried by said frame, ware-holders mounted on said conveyer, and means for driving said conveyer.

In apparatus of the character described, a furnace having a longitudinal passage-way therethrough, the side walls of said furnace being relatively adjustable for regulating the width of the passage-way, horizontal ledges formed on the inner faces of said side walls for receiving the flames of a forced downwardly-directed blast and for deflecting said flames across said passage-way, a longitudinal frame, an endless-chain conveyer carried by said frame, Ware-holders mounted on said conveyer, coacting means carried by said holders and by said furnace whereby said holders are rotated as they pass through said furnace, and means for driving said conveyer.

a longitudinal frame, an endless-chain conveyer carried by said frame, ware-holders mounted on said conveyer, said ware-holders each comprising a base-plate attached to a link of said chain, a boxplate' carried by said base-plate, a'vertical spindle journaled in said plates, a ware-receiver mounted upon the upper end of said spindle, and a pinion on said spindle; a toothed rack adapted to be engaged by the pinions as the Ware-holders pass through the furnace, a, track on which said holders slide, and driving mechanism for said conveyer-chain.

In apparatus of the character described, a frame, an endless traveling chain conveyer carried by said frame, shafts carried by said frame, cylindrical flan ed bodies eccentrically mounted on said shafts, anglebars mounted upon said cylindrical bodies, said angle-bars constituting a track, a furnace having a longitudinal assage-way therethrough located over said ame, wareholders mounted on said chain, said wareholders being adapted for traveling along said track, and means for driving said chain.

In apparatus of the character described, a frame on which is suitably mounted a conveyer mechanism, a furnace having a passage-way therethrough located over said conveyer mechanism, said furnace comprising adj u'stable side walls having ledges formed thereon, and a dome, gas-pipes entering said furnace through the dome thereof, said gas-pipes entering within air-blast pipes whereby a forced flame is directed against said ledges and is deflected by said ledges across said passage-way, and driving mechanism for said conveyer mechanism.
16. In apparatus of the character described, a 1011 itudinal frame, shafts journaled in said ame at each end thereof, a sprocket-wheel carried by each shaft, an endless sprocket-chain connecting said sprocketwheels, driving mechanism and gearing for said chain, means for adjusting said chain,
ware-holders mounted on said chain, cylinless sprocket-chain connecting said sprocketwheels, driving mechanism and gearing for said chain, ware-holders mounted on said chain, a track on which the bases of said holders are carried at each side of said chain, eccentrically-mounted means for adjusting the elevation of said track, a furnace located over said frame, said furnace having adjustable sidewalls, horizontal ledges on the inner faces of said side walls for receiving the flames of a forced downwardly-directed blast and for directin said flames over the top of the ware carrie by said ware-holders without said flames contacting said ware.

ledges on their inner faces and being relatively adjustable, and gas-feed pipes entering 'said furnace and connected with air-blast pipes whereby the ignited gas is directed against said-ledges and iscaused to be deflected therefrom over the articles of ware carried by said ware-holders.

In an apparatus of the character described, the combination with a frame and a conveyer-chain, of a, lurality of ware-holdhain, each holder comchain, a box-plate carried by said base-plate, a vertical spindle rotatably mounted in said plates, a ware-receiver carried by the upper end of said spindle, and a inion on said spin dle between said base-p ate and said boX- plate. In an apparatus of the character described,the combination with a frame and a conveyerfchain, of a lurality of ware-holders mounted on said c ain, each holder comprising a baselate secured to a link of said chain and pro ecting laterally beyond said chain, a box-plate carried by said base-plate, a vertical spindle rotatably mounted in said plates, a ware-receiver carried by the upper end of said spindle, and a inion on said spine enga ed by the dle; a rack adapted to pinions to rotate said ware-hol ers, and a track on which slide the base-plates of said holders at opposite sides of said chain.
