Description

thereof', reference being UNH-nnN STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EBENEZER JENNINGS, JR., OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPRovED SHOULDER-BRACE AND susPE'NDER.
S peciication forming part of Letters Patent No. 83,387, dated October 27, 1868.
To all whom it may concern:
Be itlcnown that I, EBENEZER JENNINGS, Jr., of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Combined Shoulder-Brace and Suspender; and I do hereby declare that Ythe following is a full, clear, and exact description had to the accompanyin g drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, in which- Figure 1 is a viewv of a combined shoulderbrace and suspender made in pursuance of my present invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view of an adjustable double slide, through which the ends of the webbing cross each other 5 and Fig. 3 is a side view of said slide.
My present invention is an improvement upon a combined shoulder brace and suspender described in Letters Patent issued to ine bearing date the 6th day of October, 1868; and the improvement consists in crossing the ends ofthe webbingor shoulder-straps through adjustable vdouble slides, as hereinafter described, and in the construction of said slides.
A A are the two main straps, which pass over the shoulders, crossing through an adjustable slide, s, on the back, as described in my said former patent. b b are slides or buckles for adjusting the length of the shoulder-straps, in the usual way. O O are adjustable double slides, through which the ends of the two straps A A cross each other at the sides of the wearer, under the arms.
The buttons on the pants should be arranged two on each side, under the arms, at suitable distances apart, so that the pants will be suspended from four points. The ends a of the straps are buttoned to the rear buttons on the sides ot the pants, and the ends a to the front buttons, said ends ot' the straps crossing each other through the adjustable double slide O above the buttons, which crossing-point may be varied at pleasure by means of said adjustable slide.
The adjustabledouble slide C is made of a single square piece of sheet metal, as follows: I take a square piece of sheet-brass or other suitable metal, as shown in Fig. 2, cut out the holes e ein each corner, and slit the sheet clear through in the lines al d. I then bend down the edges of the plate on thelines a: fr, Fig. 2, in the manner shown in Fig. 3. Itwill be seen that by slitting the plate as above described, two side wings, E E, are formed on opposite sidesot a center cross-bar, F, which is in form something like an hour-glass. By bending the edges of the plate as described, said vside wings E are made to lie in a different plane from the center cross-bar F, but parT allel thereto, leaving suflicient space between their planes for the webbing to pass through, as shown in Fig. 3. The corner holes c are made to obviate the sharp corners which would otherwise exist and abrade the webbing passing through the slide. This slide may be made of other material than metal; but I prefer metal.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A combined shoulder brace and suspender, consisting of two straps crossing each other at both ends in adjustable slides, substantially as described, either with or without an adjustable slide at the back crossing.
2. The adjustable double slide cut from a single piece of sheet metal or other suitable material, substantially as described.
