in the county of Stafford, England, 'have invented certa-in new and -useful Improvements in Pumps for I-I draulic Jacksand other Purposes, of Whic the following is a specification.
-My invention relatesA to improvements in hydraulic pumps, such as are used for testing pressures, hoistin machinery, presses, lifting-'asks and the 'ke purposes.
Te ump involves a piston having portions o different diameters a casing for the piston of different internal diameters,l checkvalves arranged to directl coperate with the respective portions of t e piston, and an additional check-valve arranged to coperate directly with the larger ortion of the piston, means being rovided or putting the ast-mentioned chec -valve into an inoperative position whereby I can secure the advantages hereinafter described.

I have illustrated this my invention 'as ap-` plied to a hydraulic lifting-jack as an example; but it will be readily seenthat it may ually be applied to similar apparatus for ot rpu-rposes.
The plunger is made of two diameters-l that is to say, the lower lunger 4 isan extension from the upper arger plun er 4a. The cylinder 5l is mad-e to agree with t etwo diameters of the plun ers. A general inletvalve 6 is provided, w 'ch admits the water through the gauze covering 7 to the chamber 8 beneath the lar er lunger 4a. A water- Apassage 9 is made ea ing from the chamber 8 to the non-return valve 10, which said.v

It will benoted that the passage 9 serves the A l ldouble purpose of providing a means of supply to t e chamber 14 and a means ofdelivery from the chamber 8 through the chamber 14 to the pressure-chamber.
I may, if desired, not put the valve 10 in the lunger, as shown in Fig. 1, but lane it in t .cylinder at the side of the p unger, with suitable passages leading from the chamber 8 to thechamber 14. (See Fig. 3.)

at I claim as my invention, and desire' to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1.` The combination of a piston having portions of different diameters, a casing for the piston, of different internal diameters, two check-valves arranged to directly co crate with the res e'ctive portions of the iston, an additionacheck-valve arrange tocoperate directly with the larger portion of the pis ton, and means for putting the lastmentioned check-valve into an inoperative position.
-2. The combination of a piston having a portion of large diameter and a portion of small diameter, the latter constitutinga prolongation of the former, a casing for-the piston, of internal form, 'to agree wlth the external shape of the piston and'havin an inlet.-

3. The combination of a cylinder and a ram, a piston having portions of different diameters, a casing for the iston, of different l internal diameters, said" piston and its casing being o eratively associat'ed'gwith the cylinder an ram, two check-valves arranged to d lrectly coperate with the respective 'portlons of the piston, and an `additional checkvalve arranged to normally `and directl cooperate wit the larger portion ofthe piston and to be moved into an inoperative position independently of the action of the piston.
4. 6. Ina device of the class described having' a reservoir, a ram-chamber, a double pump andy correspondingl pump-chambers,
a ui -passage from reservoir. to ram-chamber with whichl both pump-chambers communicate, valves in said passage, one controlling inlet, one controlling outlet, and one controlling iiow from onel8o ump-chamber to the other, and means for oldlng the first-mentioned valve off its seat. 7. In a device of the class described, the. combination, with a reservoir, a ram-chamber, a double pump and corresponding pumpchambers, of a uidassa e from reservoir to ram-chamberwhic udes the last one of said pump-chambers, a valve controlling inlet from said reservoirl a valve cbntrolllng `outlet t'o said ram-chamber and a valve con- 9o trolling'iiow from one pum -chamb'er tothe other, and means for contro ing operation of said first-mentioned valve. 4

In a device of the class described, the combination, with a-reservoir,`a ram-chamber, a double pump and corresponding pumpchambers, of a fluid-passage om reservolr to first pump-chamber, a valv said passa e, means for controlling operation of said va ve, a valved fluid-passage from said rst me ump-chamber to the second pump-chamer, and a valved fluid-passage from sald second pump-chamber to the ram-chamber. 9.In a device ofthe class described, the combination, with a'ram-chamber and a resroy, ervoir, of two communicating pump-chambers arranged. tandem, one ,connnumcatmg with -the reservoir and the other with the ram-chamber, avalve controll' commumcation betweenthe two pump-c ambers, a ne valve controlling the communication be- -tween the ram-chamber and the pump- Ichamber communicating w1th 1t, a valve 1 controll' communication between the. reserv'r an the'pump-chamber communicatx15 ing with it, means for rendering the lastnamed valve inoperative, and plstons 1n the pump-chambers..
10. In a device of the character described, the' combination', with al cylinder and ram :zo and a reservoir, of two pump-chambers arranged tandem, one commumcating wlth the reservoir and the other with` the cylmder, v connected pistons.` in `said pump-chambers,
