Specification of Letters Patent.

Be it known that I, JAMEs J. DAVIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Marys, in the county of Ste. Genevieve and State of M1ssouri, have inventeda new and useful Spring-Gun, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in spring-guns, and has for its object to provide a pistol that is especially adapted to be used for advertising.

Another object of my in-ventlon is to provide a spring-gun which is very simple and cheap in construction and one that is provided with a large wooden stock on which advertising matter may be placed.

A further object of my invention 18 to provide a gun which is especially adapted to throw small missilessuchas peas, beans, stone, &c.with considerable accuracy and with a considerable force.

With these objects in view the invention consists in the novel features of construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.

In the drawings forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a side view of the gun, and Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the gun.

Referring to the drawings, A indicates the stock of the gun, which is preferably made of thin wood and is provided with a flat spring B, which has its intermediate portion secured longitudinally on the upper face of the stock, being secured thereto to a plurality of points by any suitable means, such as tacks O. The rear free end portion of the spring B is bent upwardly and then downwardly, the extreme end portion being curved to provide a thumb-piece B On the forward face of this upwardly-extending rear portion 18 formed a downwardly-projecting lug B. The forward end portion of the spring is curved upwardly, as shown at B and carried rearwardly back above the secured portion. Adjacent the free end is formed a cup B to receive the projectile.

The operation of the device is as follows: The missiles to be thrown are placed in the cup B and the end B of the spring is hooked under the lug B, and the pistol is then set ready to be sprung, which is done by the user placing the thumb on thetrigger B and pushing downwardly, which will draw the lug B out from the end B of the spring, which will spring forward, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1, and throw the missile forward.

From the foregoing description it will be seen that I provide an exceedingly cheap spring-gun which is especially constructed to be used as an advertising device, as the stock forms a place upon which advertising matter can be printed.

Having thus fully described m y invention, what I claim as new, andv desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A device of the kind described, comprising a stock, a spring secured longitudinally in the upper face of the stock intermediate its ends, one of the end portions of the spring being bent upwardly and downwardly and terminating in a thumb-piece, the other end portion being bent rearwardly over the secured portion, and means carried by one of said end portions adapted to be engaged b y the other.

2. A device of the kind described comprising a gun-stock, a spring secured longitudinally on the stock, a free end portion of said spring extending upwardly and thence downwardly and rearwardly a lug carried by the upwardly-extending portion, the other end portion of the spring being bent back over the secured portion and adapted to engage the lug, a projectile-holding cup being formed upon said last-mentioned portion.
