Patented 0m. 20; 1868.

:g atwt @Bttita j WILLARD E. nsH, OF DAMASCUS, PENNSYLVANIA.
' L etters PatentNo. 83,252, dated October 20,1868.
IMPROVED CAR-COUPLING.
W The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and part of the same.
To all whom it may toncern:
Be it known that I, WILLARD E. BUSH, of Damascus, in the county of VVayne, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and improved Automatic Car- Ooupling; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same,- reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification. i The intention relates to an improvement in the couplinguscd for uniting raile'Jad-cars, whereby they are rendered more secure, and less liable to get out of order than those of ordinar construction, the improvements being more particularly designed to apply to a car-coupling for which I now have an application for a patent pending. v
And the invention consists in attaching spring-catches to the couplingepin, to prevent its displacement by the. motionof the cars, and in the formation of the ends of the coupling-link, and in the provision made for bolding the link in place. 7
Figure l is an outside longitudinal view \of a drawhead, showing the linkand coupling-pinin place, and the spring-catches attached to the pin.
Figure 2 is a vertical section of fig. 1, showing my' improvement.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.'
A is the draw-head.
B isthe coupling-link.
G is the coupling-pin.
, To the upper end .of the-coupling pin there are attached two springs, d d, by rivets or otherwise, as seen at e. v These springs have shoulders formed on them, .liiarked f. p I
In the pin-hole throng the draw-head, there is a recess, 9, with a projecting lip,- h, underwhich lip the M shoulders f catch, as'the pin is inserted.
As the pin is pushed down, the springs are compressed bythe hole. above the recess or lip h, but when the shoulders f hays passed below the lip, the springs expand, and the shoulderscatch under the lip, as seen in fi 2.
If? this position the pin is effectually prevented from jumping out by the motion of the cars, consequently there is no danger of the cars uncoupling when in motion.
J is the spring-bar in the draw-head, against which the coupling-pin impinges when the-cars are coupled.
The end of this bar is serrated horizontally, as seen in the drawing, at 'i, and the ends of the link are hav elled 011', so as to fit the angular grooves in the end of the bar, I
By these grooves and the bevelled ends of the link, and by the pressure of the spring-bar against the end of the link, the link is held in a horizontal position at all times, while it will accommodate itself to any difcranes in the height'of the cars in coupling.
By this arrangement the link cannot drop, but will always be ready for coupling with another car without aid from any attendant.
-I do not claim the construction .of the draw-head in this application as a novelty.
What I do claim, and'desire to secure by Letters Patent, isr The springs d (l, with their shoulders, ff, and the lip 71, on the'draw-head, substantially as and for the purposeshercin shown and described, in combination with a draw-head of a car-coupling.
The above specification of my invention signed by me, this 3d day of May, 1868.
' W. E. BUSH. Witnesses FRANK BLOOKLEY, ALEX. F l'tosnnrs.
