Description

J. W. BATES.
Bag Fastener.
Patented Gen, 20, 1868,
I Wmsm. fie: ma JJQWM N. PETERS. PhoXo-Ulhagraphnn Walhiuglrm D. c,
m? o l about J. W. BATES, GLENCOE, MINNESOTA.
Letters Patent No. 83,240, dated October 20, 1868.
IMPROVED BAG-TIE.
- The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J. W. BATES, of Glencoe, in the county of McLeod, and State of Mirmesota, have invented a new and improved Bag-Tie; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact detached to a bag.
Figure 2 is a-top view-of the-same, the cord being slackened to show its arrangement.
Figures .3 and 4 illustrate modified forms of the block.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
My inventionhas for its object to furnish an improved device for tying bags, sacks, sheaves of grain, laths, pickets, and other such articles put up in bundles, which shall be simple in construction, inexpensive, easily and quickly attached and detached, and which will hold the bag or bundle securely tied; and it consists in the block and cord, constructed and applied as hereinafter more fully described.
A is a block, made of hard wood or other suitable material. The size of the block A, for ordinary purposes, should be about two inches in length, one inch in breadth, and one-half an inch in thickness, but its size may be varied according to the particular use to which it is to be applied. I
Through the block A are formed two holes, a a about an inch or an inch and a half apart.
In'the block A is formed a slot, a, which may leadinward from the end or side edge of said block, as shown.
The slot :0 when formed in the body of the block A, may terminate in one of the holes, as a,-or' not, as may be desired.
0 is the cord or string, which has a knot formed upon one end.
In tying bundles, the cord 0 is passed through the rear hole, a, of the block A, and is drawn through. until the knot upon its end strikes against the side of the block A. i
The cord 0 is then passed around the bundle to be. tied, is passed through the forward hole a and .is drawn tight. passed beneath the rear end of the block A, and twice around the parts ofitself, between the bundle being tied and the said block A, so as to take up any slack that may be in said cord, and draw it tighter around the bundle. The free end ctthe cord O is theudrawn through the slot a making all secure. I
In tying bags, sacks, 856., a small leather disk is placed upon the cord 0, resting against the knot upon its end. The cord is then passed through one edge of the sack or bag, a little below the hem, and through the rear hole a of the block A. A second knot is then formed upon the cord, and itsfree end is passed back through the same hole in the 'said block A. u The cord 0 is then passed through the sides of the said bag, a little below the hem, in the manner of a drawstring, and. is passed through the forward holeaF. The cord 0 isthen drawn tight, is passed twice around itselfi between the said bag and the said block'A, and? is secured in the slot (L ,.in the manner before described.
Having thus described my invention,
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The arrangement of the wooden block A, having the holes a a and the slot a terminating in the hole a, with the cord G, all applied to the bag in the manner herein described and shown.
' The above specification of my invention signed by me, this 20th day of May, 1868.
J. W. BATES.
