Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 2, 1906.
Application filed August 25,1905. Serial No. 275,828-
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH GRUBER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State'of Wisconsin, have invented a new and useful Mortising-Tool, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to wood-working tools, and especially to tools for mortising window-pockets for hanging window-weights and for other purposes.
The object of the invention is to provide a device of the class embodying new and improved features of utility, convenience, durability, and adaptability.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of the class having a gage for adjusting to the work and an anvil to receive mallet-blows for driving the knives.
With these and other objects in view the present invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described, shown in the accompanying drawings, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims, it being understood that changes in the form, proportions, size, and minor details may be made without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of its advantages.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved mortising-tool. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view of the mortising-tool, taken on line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 8 is a transverse sectional view taken on line 3 3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a view in elevation of the long cutting-knife removed from the mortising-tool.
Like characters of reference designate corresponding. parts throughout the several views.
In its preferred embodiment the mortising-tool forming the subject-matter of this application is constructed wholly of metal and comprises an elongated handle-bar 10, provided at the ends with the handles 11 and 12 and upon which is slidably mounted the gage 13, controlled in any approved manner, as by the screw 14 engaging against the handle-bar.
Intermediate the handles 1 1 and 12 the bar is provided with a recess 15, formed in one surface, and transverse slits 16, formed in the opposite surface adjacent the ends of recess 15. Within the recess 15 is placed the long knife 17, having the slots 18, and in the slits 16 are disposed the short transverse knives 19. Over and embracing the knives is disposed the anvil 20, with bolts 21 passing therethrough and through the slots 18 and registering openings in the bar.
It will be readily understood that in use the gage 13 is set at the desired adjustment, the handles 11 and 12, or either of them, grasped in one or both hands, and the anvil struck with a hammer or mallet to drive the knives.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is- 1. A tool of the character described com prising a handle-bar, a knife seated within and disposed longitudinally of the handlebar, chisels disposed transversely within the handle-bar, and an anvil embracing and detachably secured to the handle-bar, said 1anvil serving to retain the chisels within the 2. A tool of the character described comprising a handle-bar having longitudinally and transversely extending recesses therein, an anvil secured to the handle-bar and embracing the recessed portion thereof and a knife and chisels retained in the longitudinal and transverse recesses respectively by the anvil.
3. In a tool of the character described the combination with an anvil having a forked end of a handle-bar having longitudinal and transverse recesses therein, a knife and chisels disposed within the longitudinal and transverse recesses respectively and retained therein by the anvil, means for clamping the anvil u on the chisels and handle-bar, and a gage a justably mounted upon the handlebar.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
JOSEPH GRUBER.
