Description

No. 832,068. PATENTED OCT. 2, 1906. J. H. LEWIS & L. G. KUNZER.
METALLIC PACKING FOR PISTON RODS.
APPLIOATION FILED NOV. 23, 1905.
circumference or break joints with each other. The inner leaf-or member fof each segment is-furnisl'icd with a narrow or compression linger f the extreme ed e of which abuts. snugly against the radial s ouldenf of the'next adjacent segment, thus forming a tight joint therewith, while at the same time rocation of the piston.- are furnished w th a peripherally-extending permitting compression or upsetting of this narrow finger, and thus compensating for wear and permitting the segments to con- :tract or come together as the inner periphery of the packing-ring wears away the recip- All the segments F groove f to receive a coiled spring-ringf, which surrounds the segmental metallic packing-ring as a whole and serves to hold the sejments together.
The-division or T ring G is snugly clamped between the gland D and the packinghead ring C and serves thus in connection with the ackin -head rin r C and "land 1) to form a tight chamber to receive the scgmen tal packingrings F and also to separate the segmental packing-rings F from each other. As illustrated in Fig.5 the division-ring G is made ofa right-angle form in cross-section,
" and the gland D is provided with an offset 'or shoulder d for the division-ring to abut against. In the construction illustrated in 1 1g. 0 also the openmgs 1n the gland l) and packing-head ring C to receive the piston are made large enough for the collar (1/ of the pistcn to pass-through, and lfl-thlS'COHSlLIIlCtlOIl we consequently. employ supplemental or abutment segmental rings K, preferably made in twoparts or segments and held together by a coiled wire spring 72'. This enables a piston having a collarto be passed through the gland. 1
We claim-;
1. In a metallic packing for piston-rods,
the combination with the cylinder-- head and piston-rod, of a packing-head ring C, gland D, diiision-ring G and a pair oi metallic segmentalpacking-rings F F each comprising a plurality of segments, havingat their meeting ends double notches or o'llsets-in differ ent planes forming overlapping leaves, and
three joints at diflerent points of the circumference, one of which oints extends only through one portion'of the radial thickness of the packingq'mg and the other two of V which "joints extend each only part way .through the other portion of the radial thickness of the packing-ring said segments being furnished on their iii per leaves or members. with a compression #fin er or member overlappedby the outer leai or' membe'rof the adjacent segment and serving by its upsetting or compression to permit the seg,
ments to contract and compensate foreaoh,
other, substantially as specified.
2. In a metallic packing for piston-rods,
1 the combination with the cylinder-head and piston, of a packing-head ring C, a gland D, a division-ring G fitting within said gland and between it and said ring 0 and a pair of segmental metallic packin -rings F F, one division-ring G.
fitting on each side of said and each comprising a plurality of segments having overlappim leaves'or members at their meeting ends orminga plurality of partial radial joints, substantially as specified.
3. In a metallic'packing for piston-rods,
the combination with the cylinder-head and piston, of a packing-head rin C, a gland D,
a division-ringv G fitting wit in said gland. and between it and said ring C and a pair of segmental metallic packing-rings F F, one fitting on'each side of sai and each comprising a plurality of segments having overlapping leaves or members at their meeting ends forming a plurality of partial radial joints, said division-ring G.be-'
ing of a T shape in cross-section and its outer rim bemgclamped between said gland D and ring C, substantially as specified.
4. In a metallic packing for piston-rods,
the combination with the cylinder-head. and
piston, of a packinghead ring C, a gland D, a division-ring G fitting withm said gland and between it and said ring C and a pair of segmental metallic packing-rings F F, onefitting on each side of said division-ring G and each'comprismg a plurality of" segments having overlappin leaves or members at their meeting ends orming a plurality of partial radial m nts, sald segments of each of said metallic packing-rings being provided division-ring G.
