Description

PATENTED SEPT. 18, 1906.
H. G. GREEDON. SUPPORT FOR BED BOTTOMS.
APPLICATION FILED MAY 21, 1906.
UNITED STATES HENRY o- CREEDON, or TOLEDO, OHIO.
PATENT OFFICE.
' SUPPORT FOR BED-BOTTOIVISI.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Y Patented Sept. 18,1906.
Application filed May 21,4906. Serial No. 317,852.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY O. OREEDoN, of,
Toledo, county'of Lucas, and State of Ohio,
vention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the ac companying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form part;
treme ends being bent angularly to hold them of this specification.
This invention relates to bed-bottoms; and it has for its object to provide a simple, inex-; pensive, easily assembled, and effective sup-' port for mattresses, cots, stretchers, and the ke, employing a frame of wood or metal with a covering of Woven wire, linked fabric, or canvas.
A further object is to provide a bed-bot. tom with a support which shall maintain the I flexible covering thereof in its original form and condition and preserve the same from sagging and distortion.
A further object is to equalize and distribute the strain upon the flexible covering when two individuals of different weight recline upon the bed, so that the flexible covering will at all times assume nearly a true plane.
The invention consists in the novel combination, arrangement, and the details of con.- struction hereinafter shown, described, and specifically pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, illustrative of the invention, Figure 1 is a plan view of a woven-wire mattress, showing the flexible covering thereof supported in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is an enlarged view illustrating the construction of the rectangular frame of the support.
Referring to the drawings, 1 represents end rails, and 2 side rails, of the mattress-frame, having a flexible covering 3, secured to the end rails, a fragment only of the covering being shown. In illustrating the a plication of my invention I have shown two ike supports arranged side by side, and as they are identical in construction the description will suflice for both. Each support comprises a substantially rectangular central frame and is constructed as follows: I take two metal tubes 4 and 5 and pass two U-shaped wires or rods 6 and 7 through the same in opposite directions, as shown in Fig. 2, the intermediate portions of the U-shaped wires forming two i opposite sides of the central frame of the support and the tubes 4 and 5 forming the other sides of said frame. The portions 8 and 9 of the U-shaped wires which project through the tubes are then bent angularly, as shown in dotted lines a and b, Fig. 2, and the ends of said portions are connected to helical springs 10, which are then attached to the end rails 1 by any suitable means. Also located within the tubes 4 and 5 and projecting from the ends thereof are wires 11, the ends of which are inserted'into the flexible covering, the exthe flexible covering and also to distribute the supporting means on either side' of the central frame. The portions 8 and 9 of the U-shaped wires where a double support is required are bent at a sharp angle and returned, as at 12, and are joined together by a connecting-wire 13, which serves to divide the flexible covering along acentral line and also assists to a considerable extent in supporting the fabric.
From the foregoing it is seen that I provide a support which is simple and inexpensive in construction. It is apparent that the support may be attached to any ordinary woven-wire mattress by any one possessing ordinary mechanical skill and that the same may therefore be constructed as an article of manufacture to be attached to any make of bed-bottom. For the purpose of shipping large quantities of the support parts may be packed in a small space at a considerable saving in shipping charges.
Although I have shown the connectingwire 13 and also the transverse supportingwires 11 as a part of the structure in the double support illustrated in Fig. 1, these parts are not essential to my invention, and may be dispensed with.
Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
1. The combination with a mattress-frame and the flexible covering therefor, of a rectangular support for the covering comprising parallel-arranged tubes and interconnecting wires maintaining said tubes in position, and helical springs connecting the ends of said wires with the frame, substantially as described.
2. The combination with a frame and a flexible covering therefor, of a rectangular IIO support for said covering consisting, of parallel-arranged tubes and U shaped wires inarranged tubes and U-shaped wires inserted in opposite directions through. said tubes, the ends. of said Wires which project beyond the ends ofsaid; tubesbeing bent angularly, and helical. springsconnecting said 'wireends'with the frame, substantially as described.
4.. The combination with; a frame and the fiexible covering therefor, of. a rectangular support for said covering comprising parallelarranged tubes and U-shaped wires inserted ingopposit'e directions through said. tubes, the intermediate portions of. said wires connecting; the ends of said tubes and forming the sidesof-f the rectangular support, the ends of the wires rojectingthrough. the tubes being bent angu arly, and helicalv springs connecting said: wire endsWiththe frame, substantially as described.
5.. The combination with a frame having end. and. side rails, and a flexible covering therefor attached to the end rails, of. a. pair of rectangular supports for the covering arranged side by side and each. comprising a pair ofv spaced. transversely-arranged tubes and U shaped wires inserted in opposite directions through said tubes and having the rojecting ends bent angularly toward the end'rails, helical springs connecting said ends with the end rails of the frame, and transyersely-arranged Wires disposed within said tubes and extending beyond the ends thereof, the ends of said wires being bent anguilarly and inserted into the flexible covering,
the frame, the ends of said portions which adjoin each other being bent angularly rearward, a wire connecting said angular ends and supporting the flexible covering along a centralv ine, and helical springs connecting the outer ends of the portions 8 and 9 with the end rails of. the frame, substantially as described.
In. testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HENRY C. CREEDON.
