COMBINED BRUISING AND CRUSHING ROLLER-MILL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 4:, 1906.
Application filed December 22, 190 Serial No. 237,988.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALFRED JOEL, a citizen of Switzerland, residing at Zurich, Switzerland, have invented new and useful Improvements in a Combined Bruising and Crushing Roller-Mill, of which the following is a specification.
For some time efforts have been made to construct a mill that would bruise and crush at the same time. These efforts resulted in the combined bruising and crushing mills with smooth rollers and grinding-disks which are built especially in En land. However, in the mills of this type onIy the hopper and the frame are united, while the bruising and .crushing is eflected by means of apparatus which are kept separate. Moreover, the high price of these combined mills has prevented them from coming into general use.
The present invention has for its object a mill which effects in a very simple manner the work of bruising and crushing on the same part.
In the annexed drawings several forms of execution are shown as representative ex amples.
Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the subject-matter of this invention with two rollers. Fig. 2 is a plan view representing the arrangement of rollers accordin to Fig. 1. Figs. 3 and 4 show modified forms of rollers.
In Fig. 2 the working parts are shown as follows: By means of pulley f and of gear wheels h h the rollers A B are made to turn in opposite directions on shafts g g, which run in bearings 7c, secured on a frame 'i i.
Figs. 1 and 2 show that the working rollers are provided only on one part of their length a with a fluted surface, while the other part a remains smooth.
The roughened or fluted portion is intended for bruising, while the smooth portion is used for crushing. According to the division of the rollers the hopper I) and the feedtable 0 are also divided into two portions 1) i b and c c by means of the partition-wall d for the hopper and the stay e for the feedtable.
In view of the fact that the crushing opera tion can be best effected with rollers having a different speed of rotation, while a better bruised product will be obtained with rollers having the same speed of rotation the wheels can be geared so as to correspond to the requirements for crushing and if the machine has to be used solely for bruising gear-wheel h, Fig. 2, can be taken off, and the loose roller B is then taken alon at the same speed by the driven roller A so ely on account of its adhesion.
In order to obtain without the necessity of exchanging the gear-wheels for the simultaneous operations of crushing and bruising on the fluted crushing portion different and on the smooth bruising ortion uniform speeds of rotation of the ro lers, the following constructions may be provided.
One of the rollers C and D, Fig. 4, is provided with a smooth portion m, which turns on shaft g, so that when the rollers are driven at different speeds the turning smooth portion is drawn along by friction with that of the fixed roller 0. The two smooth roller portions have therefore uniform speeds of rotation, while the fluted portions are driven at different s eeds.
Fig. 3 s'liows that the two portions of the two rollers E and F can also have different diameters, so that when gear-wheels with corresponding diameters are used the fluted portions n n work'with different and the smooth portions 0 0 with uniform speeds of rotation. above-described kind there might also be used each time one fluted or roughened roller and one smooth roller, each of which has the width of the res ective identical portion of the combined rol er and each of which can be provided with separate gear-wheels, so that the desired uniform and different speeds of rotation can be obtained.
In order to facilitate their construction, the combined rollers can alsobe composed of two or more pieces.
I claim as my invention- 1. A mill having a roller which has on one portion of its length a roughened or fluted surface and on the adjacent portion a smooth surface and a second roller having similar working surfaces coacting therewith so as to allow the mill to be used for crushing as well as for bruising.
2. A mill having two rollers provided with rough and smooth surfaces, and means for rotating the contacting rough surfaces at different speeds and the smooth surfaces at substantially the same speeds.
However, besides a roller of the 3. Amill having two rollers provided with In testimony whereof I have signed my smooth and rough contacting surfaces, the name to this specification in the presence Of/IO smooth portion of one roller having turning two subscribing Witnesses. movement in relation to the rough portion 5 so that said smooth portion can attain the ALFRED JOEL speed of rotation of the counteracting smooth Witnesses: portion of theoth'er roller When the two roll- J OSEPH SIMON,
