GUARD FOR KITCHEN UTENSILS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 4, 1906.
Application filed July 19,1905. Serial No. 270,379.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, OSCAR V. Snrs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Laurel,
in the county of Jones and State of Mississippi,
have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Guards for Kitchen Utensils, of which the following is a specification.
This invention consists of a novel form of guard designed particularly to be applied to kitchen utensilssuch as forks, spoons, pancake-turners, or the liketo protect the hand by which the utensil is grasped in the manip ulation of such utensil. As is well known, the hand grasping the utensil, such as above mentioned, is often burned or otherwise injured in stirring or manipulating foods in cooking, and it is the purpose of this invention to guard against the above by the means which will be more clearly pointed out as the description proceeds.
For a full description of the invention and the merits thereof and also to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction of the means for effecting the result reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view of a fork, showing the application of the invention. Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view of the construction in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a transverse section on the line X X of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the invention applied to a spoon. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the invention applied to a pancaketurner.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.
In the practical embodiment of the invention the utensil to which it is applied is preferably of special construction and embodies a tang 1, which carries the fork 2,in Fig. 1, the spoon 3, as shown in Fig. 4, or the turner 4, shown in Fig. 5. The tang 1 tapers to ward one end, and this end is received in a sleeve 5, affixed to a handle 6, the latter being of any suitable form desired and preferably consisting of a length of wire bent upon itself and having its extremities 7 soldered upon the interior of the sleeve 5. The ends or extremities 7 of the handle 6 are tapered toward the outermost portions thereof to conform somewhat with the tapered form of the tang 1, which is received in the sleeve 5 and which when forced therein wedges between the parts 7, so as to frictionally bind thereagainst and obviate all likelihood of looseness or play. The tang 1 is prevented from displacement from the sleeve 5 by the provision of a thumb-screw 8, which is adapted to be screwed through a side of the sleeve 5 into an opening transversely formed in an end portion of the tang.
The guard, which forms an essential feature of this invention, is indicated at 9, and con sists, essentially, of a conical or tapered body preferably made of sheet metal, the smaller end of the body being open so as to receive and snugly fit about the sleeve 5. The screw 8, which screws the tang 1 to the handle 6, is adapted to screw through an opening in a side of the guard 9 at its smaller end, and the outer extremity of the screw bearing against the inner-side of the guard affords a rigid and substantial securing means to hold the guard in position. The guard 9 is of a size sufiicient to readily embrace or surround the hand which grasps the handle 6 and likelihood of said han d being burned by splashing of grease or nearness to a hot receptacle is entirely obviated in 'a manner which will be apparent.
The constructions in Figs. 2 and 3 are sub stantially the same as in Fig. 1, with the exception that the utensil shown is of a different character, illustrating the adaptation of the invention.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is 1. In combination, a kitchen utensil embodying a tang tapering at its outer end, a handle comprising a sleeve and a body composed of a piece of wire bent upon itself and having its extremities tapering and aflixed to the sleeve within the latter, the tang aforesaid being received in the sleeve and wedged between the tapered ends of the handle-wire, a guard for the handle having an end thereof surrounding the sleeve aforesaid, and a screw passing transversely through the guard-sleeve and engaging the tang to secure said parts together.
2. In combination, a kitchen utensil such as a fork, spoon or the like embodying a tang tapered at its outer end and provided with a transverse opening therein, a handle embodying a sleeve at one end receiving the tapered In testimony whereof I affix my signaturetang, a guard of conical form embracing or in presence of two Witnesses. surrounding the handle and having the OSCAR V SIMS [I S 1 smaller end thereof about the sleeve afore- 5 said, and a screw passing transversely Witnesses:
through the tang, sleeve and smaller end of O. H. FATHENER, the guard to hold the parts together. W. F. RUMBLE.
