Be it known that I, RoLLIN H. Whites, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of .Cuyohogo and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Regulated Hestins Mechanism for Steam (.reners-tors, of
ex- :iet description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing.
The specific object for which this invention was designed is to utilize kerosene the fuel for generating stculn on u sienna-curringe and to nutonniticolly regulate. the iirc in accordance with requirements oi the eng'ine for steam. "The apparatus, however, is adopted for use with other liquid fuels and it is useful in other ,phiecs than on tenurcarriuges. It is believed, however, i V invention is most useful when used tor the purpose first mentioned, particularly becnusc it is a practical solution of is. problem upon which many clever men have worked diligently during the few years last piistnamely, how to dispense with gsselene on n automobiles Without requiring the l'ul care oil the operator. .3 he invention may be here summorizml as co sisting in the combinations of parts hereinafter described, and pointed out definitely in the emim.
The drswing'isn disgron'nnctic View of the mechanism constituting my invention, some of the constituent parts being shown in non. 1
Referring to the parts by letters, A presents on oil-supply tank for containing ionosene or other oil.
B. represents a float-valve chamber which. is connected with the oil-tank by a pipe c. lit contains a l'loutwnlvc, l), which outoin ica-lly regulates the quantity of oil which may enter said chamber. The. oil may flow by gravity from the tnnli to the ilout valvc chamber, or it may be forced into said cham her by con'ipressed air in the tank A.
t, represents an otomizennozzlc of any familiar or suitable construction, and a represents the pipe connecting the chamberB flasher type and constructed of a series of supoi-posed coils connected in "Water is admitted to the upper coil through a pipe L, and superheated Slittl'li. is discharged from the lower coil to the pipe H, which is connected with the engine J. It is understood, of con w, that the Waiter delivered to the generator is forced through the pipe L and into the generator under considerable pressure. It is with this type oi generator alone that the l'l816ll1-lGSCIll38(l invention is applicable. lhopressuro and temperature of the stenn'i in such a generator do not bear any definite rehttionship with each other. 'lhcreiore it is not possible to accomplish satisfactory regulation of the fire to heat such a generator by means of devices operated by the steam-pressure. Such regulattion is of necessity attained in a practical way by the use of a thermostat which is subject to the action of the temperature of the steam when it is about to be discharged from the lower coils of the generator.
'lhe thermostat maybe of'substzintially tnc c structicn illustrated in my prior patent, fiiigtiti, and dated-August 19, 1902, and is located in it straight tube 9, forming one of the lower coils of said genersitor. This or some metal having a relatively high cothermostat includes a tube is of copper eiiicient of expansion, which tube is rigidly fastened to the valve-casing K. Within this.
tube is rod. is of a relatively low coefiicient of expansion, as iron, which is made fast to the closed outer end of the tube. The other end of this red projects into the valve-casing and engages with the bell-crank lever 0 therein, whereby the valve E may be raised to a. great or or less extent fronnits seat or allowed to seat itself by gravity or otherwise. The higher the host to which this thermostat is subjected the more will the end of this iron .rod recede from the bell-crank lever with Which it engages, and therefore the more Will this valve be permitted to close. As the temperature to which the thermostat is subjecl'ed is lowe' red the end ol the rod will move in a contrary dircciion, and thereby open the valve loan ex'eni; proportionalc lo the temperature.
In the pipe 7. between the air-pump and the air'lanri is a cheek-Naive n. A hy-pass M is connected with ihis pipe around that hart thereof in WI h the clnclovalve n is placed, and in this hy-pass is secured a regw lator. This regulalor is substantially like that which is shown and described in my prior patent, No. 37,5984, dared Septemhcr l, 1903. This regul tor l as a casing l, across which al'lcizible diaplnagin 1) is placed The pressure Within the air-tank acts against one side of the diaph' ,l'fi, and on the other side of said. diaphragm is 4' i-"alve Q, lapied to he operated thereby to open a :elicl-passmge l'or the air, ihe on of this valve permits the air which 1s iii. sling by the airpunu': to'enr; sin P, and (his air lr csea through ill-e pine i ang d to close the valve when the .raure in the tank has been sullicie T represent which is arra ngcd hen h the gene so as to haifl the same.
The burner shown or fauniliar Form, and
thercl'ore it not though? necessary to dcscrlhc it. ,finy other sunahle burner may he employed.
1 a A p ll .1) Vain/unis manual opn ated valve 5 lie/"UNA the iianh l and the valve I'D. Wlni. bhis valve 5% is open, the liow of compressed air through pipe ll and l'roin' the a?on-1izer-nozzl.e draws oil l'rom he floatvalvc chainher. us a resuli mixed oil-;, and air is discharged from said nor: hnrner i which ii is burned. generator and inio steam.
1' through is diminishing; inc
the llow i :d as n (a a sir-earn of Suiili I open lhis valve, and thereby to increase rho supply of combustible furnished to the burner.
Steam is taken from the generator through pipe ll and delivered to the engine and the engine operates the air-pump. By the operalion oi this pump and the action oi the re lief-valve Q the air-pressure in the tank is maintained substantially constant The apparatus as an entirety is selfconfaincd and automatic in its action. it per mils the use of kerosene or other liquid fuel, so that thepropcr amount is furnished to generate steam in volume commensurate with the demand of the engine and suhsianlially uniform as to degree of superheat and to do this automatically Without assistance from the operator.
l'laving described my invention, 1 claim The combination of a steam-generator oi the flasher type consisting of a plurality of superposed coils of pipe connected in series, having thewater-inlet connected to an upper coil and li-he steam-outlet to a lower co l, henting-hu'rner nnder said generator, an atoniizer-nozzle furnishing comhustihle to the
