VALVE OR STOPPER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 14:, 1906.
To all whom, it may concern.-
' Be it known that I, CHRISTIAN W. MEIN- EOKE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Jersey City Heights, county of Hudson, and State of New Jersey, have invented new and useful Improvements in Valves or Stoppers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a valve or stopper which can be applied to various articles as, for example, cushions, operating-pads, hotwater bags, icebags, and the like.
This valve allows water to'be poured into an inflatable article and also allows the introduction of air. For example, if a cushion is to be inflated and also heated or kept warm or cooled hot or cold water can'be poured through the opened valve insufficient quantity to partly fill the article and the rest of the space can then be filled with air forced or blown in through the valve. The air holding the device inflated and the water keeping the device at a required temperature, the same can be used without chilling or heating or affecting the user. The above is merely an example of use, but not a limitation of the invention.
The interior of the device might have elastic or s ongy material; but this is no essential part 0 the invention.
This invention is set forth in the following specification and claims, and illustrated. in the annexed drawings, in which Figure 1 shows a valve embodying thisinvention applied to an article such as a cushion, bag, bottle, or other devicefor containing air or water, or both. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the valve with the co lar or seat slightly modified in form. Fig. 3 is a plan view of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 shows a modification. Fig. 5 is a plan view of Fig. 4. Fig. 6 shows a further modification. Fig. 7 is an under view of the plug or stopper part of Fig. 6.
In the drawings is shown a stopper or valve comprising a plug ortion a. Tnis is shown hollow and as havlng a screw-thread, which is the construction usually employed, although a bayonet-joint connection or other suitable arrangement can be applied. A collar or bushing I) has a bend or seat 0, and when the stopper comes to the seat the valve is closed. Awasher or packing d is provided. When the plug rests on the seat and the interposed packing is compressed, an effective closure is obtained. The packing can be connected to the stopper or under face thereof, as seen in Fig. 2, where a rivet or fastening 6 connects the washer or packing-disk to the plug. In Fig. 6 the packing is circular or ring-shaped and sits on the collar.
WVhen the plug is removed, water can be poured through the collar into the bag or article. The stopper can then be partly inserted or put in place, but not so as to close or compress the packing and prevent inflation.
The plug or stopper being hollow and having an air-inlet or nipple f and outlets or airexit g, air can be blown through the stopper to inflate the article. The air exits or holes 9 can be at any suitable point. In Fig. 2 an exit or series of holes is shown at the side of the stopper. In Fig. 7 the exit-holes are at the bottom of the stopper. The nipple or inlet can form part of or be in shape of a handle, as in Fig. 2, or the handle could be separate from the nipple.
In Fig. 5 is shown a handle h, as well as a nipple.
When the article is suitably inflated, the plug or valve is closed and the air is thus con fined in the article. An article is indicated in a general way at i, Fig. 1. The valve being closed, no air can escape and no water can enter the interior of the valve. To inject air or inflate, it is not necessary to entirely remove the plug from its seat.
This device can be used as a stopper for water only, or it can be used as a valve for air only, or as a combination water-stopper and air-valve. This valve or stopper also enables air to be withdrawn or forced out of an icebag or hot-water bag after the bag is partly filled with ice or Water.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A stopper comprising a threaded collar provided at its lower end with an inwardlyextending annular flange to constitute a seat, said collar adapted to be secured to a receptacle or bottle, and a hollow plug 0 en at its top and closed at its bottom and aving a part of its body portion screw-threaded to engage the screw-threads of the collar, said plug adapted to be screwed into the collar and against the seat, and the said plug being removable from said collar and having its body portion provided with an opening in close roximity to the bottom of the lug for intro 'ucing air into the receptacle when the plug is partly removed from its seat.
2. A stopper comprising a threaded collar provided at its lower end with an inwardlyextending annular flange to constitutea seat, and a plug having an open top and a bottom, and further having the body portion screwthread'edto engage the screw-threads of the collar, said plug provided with a flange adapted to engage the top edge of the collar when the plugv is screwed home, said plug adapted-to) be screwed into the. collar and against the seat, and the said plug being removable from. the said collar and providedwith an opening for introducing air into a receptacle when the plug is; partly removed from its seat.

A stopper comprising a threaded collar provided at its lower end with an inwardlyeXtending-annularflange to constitute a seat, said collar-adapted tobe secured to a receptacle or bottle, and a hollow plug open atv its topand closed at its bottom and having a part of its body portion screw-threaded to en gage the screw-threads of the collar, said plug further having its body portion provided with a flange adapted to engage the top edge of the collar when the lug is screwed home, said plug adapted to e screwed into the collar and against the seat and the said plug being removable from the said collar and having its body portion provided with an opening in close proximity to the bottom of the plug for introducing air into the receptacle when the. plug is partly removed from its seat, and awasher interposed between the seat ot the collar and the bottom of the plug and secured to the bottom of the plug.
