Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY MOORE, OE SENECA COUNTY, OHIO.
MACHINE FOR PREPARING HUBS FOR THE RECEPTION F BOXES.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 8,265, dated July 29, 1851.
purpose of boring the hubs and setting the boxes of wagon, carriage, railway ca'r and other vehicle wheels.
To enable others to make use of my in-A vention I will proceed to describe its construction and operation. I construct my auger and box-setter by a mandrel or shaft marked 3, together with a sliding shaft marked 5, with knives marked 0, so attached as to cut both ends of the hub atthe same time. The knives pass through the mandrel and sliding shaft and are fastened by nuts marked 7 which pass round the mandrel and sliding shaft and are so adjusted as to shift in order to enlarge or lessen the bore. The mandrel and sliding shaft passes through cross stays marked l, and 2, with a screw thread cut upon the mandrel where it passes through the cross stay marked 2.
The cross stays l, and 2, are connected by the connecting rods marked 8, and 9, with a screw thread cut upon each. They pass out side of the hub and between the spokes of the wheel so that when the wheel and hub is turned it causes the h ub to move upon the mandrel and to free the knives by means of the screw upon the mandrel. lThe sliding shaft with the slot marked 4, passes lon- 40 gitudinally through or into the mandrel which enables it to be shifted to any length commensurate with the slot. i
Vhat I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- The sliding shaft with the slot marked 4, passing longitudinally into the mandrel together with the screw thread cut upon the mandrel to feed the knives and the knives which are so adjusted as to act at both ends at the same time and also cross stays similar in construction (which may be formed of wood) to those marked l, and 2, in the above description which are intended for the purpose of fastening and truing the hub all of which will app-ear by the above description exceptthe cross stays for the purpose of securing and turning the hub during the process of boring.
HENRY MOORE.
