Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WILLIAM ELMER BAI- LEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Findlay, in the county of Hancock and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Periodical-Files; and I do declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to a device for temporarily filing and handling periodical publications, pamphlets, and the like which are stitched or fastened by staples or other means of binding and yet are more or less flexible, so that their bound or back portions can be bent to be engaged in or upon the said device.

To these ends the invention consists of a filing device or file which is made out of a single piece of wire and is adapted to have the publication or print, whatever it may be, threaded upon the ends thereof and held thereby for convenience in reading and for filing upon a shelf or wall, all substantially as shown and described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.

Referring now to the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of my improved file with several separate periodicals or pamphlets supported therein, and Fig. 2 is a view in elevation of the file shown in Fig. 1.

Obviously the figures are to be interpreted as representing the invention in one of the several obvious forms it may assume rather than in its only and exclusive form, as will also appear in the further description herein. I

As thus shown the file or device is constructed from a single piece of suitable wire, which is bent into the form of a parallelogram having straight sides and ends, except that the continuous or unbroken side 2, constituting the so-called back of the file, has a therein, which adapts the file to behung upon a nail or peg on a wall to put it out of the way. It will be noticed that said loop stands horizontally or in a plane with the sides of the publications B, so that it will not be in the way when the file is laid down upon a table or shelf. This brings said loop at right angles to the straight or square ends 4 and 5, which in the style of file herein shown have the respective ends 6 and 7 bent into the same line one with the away shown, the idea in any and all constructions being that the device shall have the end portions 4 and 5 parallel to each other and of suflicient length to thread thereon as many publications or pamphlets as may be desirable to bring together in this way and which obviously will vary in number according to their thickness and according to the lengths of said ends or according to the number of publications desirable to have united in this way.

Now in order to use these files it is necessary to provide the pamphlets or other publication with perforations or holes 8, spaced apart and corresponding to the ends 4 and 5 of the file, and these can be easily formed by means of a suitable punch or other available means. Then having provided these holes the paper or pamphlet or periodical is placed in or on the file by engaging the long stem through one hole and the short stem through the other and bringing both holes down over the two parallel ends 4 and 5, as seen in Fig.1. The wire, being flexible, can be bent aside to thread the paper thereon, when the ends thereof spring back into alinement again as before. These ends lock the publication on the ends 4 and 5, so that as to the accidental slipping of the paper or publication off of the file while handling the same it is as secure as if there were no opening through which it can be removed by hand.

What I claim is The filing device formed of wire with an integral back portion and a divided front portion of different lengths, and said device having parallel ends at right angles to the said front and back portions and integral therewith, whereby when a publication is engaged over both said ends by passing it first over the longer end and then over the shorter one it is confined thereon, substantially as set forth.
