GENERAL ELECTRIC COMPANY,
A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK.
SNAP-SWITCH.
Speccaton of Letters Patent.
Patented July 3, 1906.
To all whom it 77mg/ concern:
Be it known that I, MoNTRAvILLE M.
yWOOD, a-citizen of the United States, residing at Schenectady, in the county of Schenectady and State of New York, -have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Snap-Switches, of which the following is a its extreme open or closed rom electric arcing by the parts remediate osition is prevented;
` s ranged that t punchings and ing and in consequence of .manufacture is greatly reduced.
A urt er object of my invention is to provide an electric snap-switch in Which the several operative arts are so designed and arey may be. made of metal without .expensive machinwhich the cost of The invention will be readily understood upon reference to the following description and he accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in whicli- Figure-1 is a vertical longitudinalsection .of the inclosing box-and o erative parts-of the two-button snap-switc embodying my i invention with the partsv shown in their respective positions at the instant of c losing. Fig. 2 is asimilar section ofthe box withthe operative parts shown in. locked position, and Fig. 3 is an end elevation of. the o erating parts with the blades and their ins ating connections to the switch-shaft shown in section.
`The inclosing shell or box A isinade of porcelain and provided with the usual apertures for leading in the conductor-wires. To the inner eiid walls of the boxare secured metallic binding-posts B, to which the stationary contacts C are secured. Across the open side of the box A is attached the supporting-plate D, and overlying the'plate and constituting a iinished covering for the box E, in which are provided is the face-plate the passage of the pushsuitable holespfor` buttons F.l
VIn the prese t constructions two switchblades 1 and 2 are employed, each non-rotatively connected through insulation '3 to a action, so that injury to the contact,
for a perceptible period in an inter-A horizontal shaft 4, which is journaled in an arm 5, depending from the center of an edge of the supporting-plate D. The arm 5 is rovided with a ixed bushing 6, which affords a long bearing for the shaft, and below the bushingit is extended sidewise and has formed therein a segmental slot 7, concentric with the axis of the bearing.' On the outside of the bushing 6 is a sleevedbearing 8, to which a rocking lever 9 is attached. The rocking lever is ivotally connected at each end to a metal bracket 410, secured to the inner end of a push-button F, and is rovided at its lower edge with an arm 11, lient up parallel to the shaft 4, and at its upper e ge with a series ofgear-teeth 12.
A latch-plate 13 is mounted upon the 'shaft v4, between the end of the bushing 6 and the insulation 3 at the right-hand end thereof, and secured to rotate with the shaft -by a pin 14,' exten into the insulation. The
an arm 15, bent paral el to the shaft, so as 11 of the rocking lever, and extends through the slot 7, so as to abut at either end of its oscillation against.the radial ends of said slot. .The u lperu end of the latch-plate extends upWal y a considerable distance and isbent -in the same' direction as arm 15 and provided at its end with a shoe 16, which engages stops 17, carriedv by an oscillating plate 18. The oscillating plate is journaled upon a stubshaft 19, carried by the arm' 5, and consists of a metal punching of disk shape with gear- 4 teeth 20 formed in' its lower edge, which mesh with the teeth formed on the upper edge of'the rocking lever 9. The stops 17 are formed at diametrically oppositepointsl to swing in a path just below that of the arm and has its opposite ends extended outward i ,and crossed, as indicated in Fig. 1, so as to yengage the opposite edges of arms 11 and 15 Aof 'the rocking" lever and the latch-(plate and operating thereon to normally hol themin alinement.
The operation of vthe device above #described is as follows :j'When the parts are .at
rest, the shoe y16 of the latch-lever is, aswillbe v Aexplained later, in engagement with the outer lsurface ofone ofthe stops and is thereby prevented trom moving when the pushbntton F on theA opposite end of the switch is being forced inwerd. vfrom its outermost position to neer itsextreme inner position, therebyputting the spring 2-1 under tension. As the button reaches its innermost position 'the oscillating 'plate 18, which is geared te the roh-king lever 9 to move simultaneously therewith, carries the stop 17, with 'which the latch-lever was in engorgement, QU. of the path of the shoe 16 and allows the letchde ver end the switch-blades 1 and 2 connected therewith to move With e snap action -under the recoil et the spring intotheir oppositepositions. their respective positions just after the switch-blades heve'moved into closedv posi,-
tion with the left-hand button in its extreme inner position. lt is to be noted that the latch-lever 13 is arrested by contacting with the end of the segmental slot 7 before its erm 15 reaches alinement Vwith arm 1.1 of the rocking lever, so that when pressure is ref moved from the button the spring 21. acts automatically to move the rocking lever 9, and with it the oscillating;A plete LS, backward. e slight distance, thereby bringing a stop. i7, .into the path ot' the shoe, es shown in Fig. 2.
I do not Wish to restrict myself te the perticuler construction or arrangement of; parte herein described and Shown, since it is appar ent that they mey be changed and modified without departing from my invention.
:f What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United Stetcsfis" 1. In en electric snap-switch, the/terribination of e switchfblede, e lockil'igfmember connected to move therewith, a rockinglevcr pivoted coaxially with the sWitch-blede, a, spring connecting the locking member 21nd. the lever, and ay pivoted member connected. to move simultaneously with seidy lever and provided with/retaining .devices adapted to oppose the movement of the locking member;

5. In en electric snepswitch, the combination of e pvoted switch-blade, a locking member connected to `Inovc therewith, e rocking lever pivoted coexially With seid perte end provided et one edge with geen teeth, e spring normally eictingto hold the lever and the locking member in e definite angular position, and en oscillating member having gear-teeth meshing; with the correspending teeth of seid vlever and provided with.projectionsedepted toengage an end of the locking member during c predetermined en Iller-.movement et the rocking lever.
. an electric snap-switch, the combination of a support provided with e seg- 'mentel slot, e shaft journeled in scid sup port, a s witchrblede mounted on the shaft, e
locking-blade rigidly connected to said 'switch-.binde end provided et one end with.
en. erm extending into seid segmental slot andy at its opposite ond with en offset, e rocking lever hiiving en erm .in proximity to the ar-,m of seid locking-blade, e spring normally acting to hold the arms of the lever and the locking-blade in elinement, end en oscillating member connected to move simultaneously With the rocking,r lever end provided With projections adopted to cngege the offset end of. the lockingdever end hold it froml movement during the movement of theroclring. lever from one cxtreme position to the other.
